At Dawning

Dawning for Clarinet Violin Cello and Piano was composed by Niels Rosing-Schow in 2015. Written for the Northern Lights Ensemble (Ensemble Nordlys).

This spellbinding setting of words from Act 1 Scene 1 of Hamlet depicts a bird of dawning singing all night long in celebration of the Saviour's birth with Shakespeare's characteristically evocative imagery heightened by Chilcott's artful word-setting.

Hymnus was commissioned by the Wilhelmina Easterein Fanfare Orchestra in the Autumn of 1999 for their performance at the World Music Contest Kerkrade. The commission was the result of a collaboration between the composer and the thenmusical director Marten van der Wal. The exact meaning of the word Hymnus is not known but it is taken in this presentation to mean hymn or hymn-like. The melodic material is organic and grows from an initial unison tone. Thisinterval is gradually expanded to form the cell F E C F a semitone third fifth. The only other melodic motif is the ascending three-note pattern spanning a major third. This is the second of his compositions to use this ascending motif theother being Fanfare for a Bright New Age for Brass Band and Organ also of 2000. These characteristic intervals appear in many contrasting moods and guises throughout the piece. The opening unison notes are intended to convey as sense ofpower and magnificence like the first sounds at the dawning of the universe. After the immense power a period of stunned silence and reverence. The evolution of the hymn melody incorporates a variety of moods and atmospheres sometimes expressing much joy and celebration whilst also suggesting periods of intense savagery or prayerful contemplation. The hymn builds as the piece progresses and is finally stated in its complete form at letter W. The official worldpremiere of the work was given by Wilhelmina Easterein at the World Music Contest 2001. Whilst the composer was unable to attend in person he was able to enjoy the premier simultaneously transmitted via a mobile phone from the audience! Conductors Note The tempo indications are to be viewed as a guide rather than a literal instruction. Within the music there is an innate sense of pulse and metre lending itself to considerable rubato. Melody is king and all else is mere support and decoration careful attention must therefore be given to balance.

During his lifetime John Dowland was one of the few English composers whose fame spread throughout Europe. He has never been entirely forgotten although his music was almost completely ignored during the whole of the eighteenth century and most of the nineteenth. The early twentieth century saw a dawning recognition among scholars and specialists of the rare quality of his work.This is a comprehensive and exhaustive collection of Dowland’s compositions for the Lute with critical commentaries lists of sources and biographical notes as thoroughly compiled and edited by Diana Poulton and Basil Lam.The music is presented in both keyboardnotation and Lute tablature.

This work was written at the pivotal point of both two centuries and two millennia. With its hopeful melodies and triumphant parts in the brass section the opening pictures the dawning of a new era of great expectations characterized by the high speed of communicating all over the world which is one of the most important aspects of life in the 21st century. This is achieved by musical themes being rapidly transferred from one musician to another. In this vortex of information and fast business transactions the sense of individuality threatens to become extinct. At this point Brosse silences the orchestra (a symbol of society) and draws attention to those peoplewho are less fortunate than most of us. This focus on other people culminates with an orchestral climax in which all powers come together with a feeling of euphoria.

Per Nørgård's Remembering Child - Viola Concerto No. 1  (1985-86/rev 1987) -Two movements for Viola and Chamber Orchestra.. The title refers to the original meaning of the word 'remembering': Making whole. Thework should not be considered as a sort of requiem for Samantha Smith - the late 13 years old fighter for nuclear disarmament - but as an evocation of the childish creative forces in all people young and old. Therefore the work applies thematic material of a certain 'dawning' quality including two Gregorian chants appearing intertwined in the beginning of the 2. movement. And therefore the work also may be considered as a tribute to the still living child-heretics fighting against the global lunacy of grown-up such as Eamon Burke the Australian boy continuing independently the work of Samantha.
