Festival for Solo Cello and String Orchestra

Cheryl Frances-Hoad's The Dreams That Fly from Me for solo String Quartet and String Orchestra. Score. 'The Dreams That Fly From Me is a ten minute work for solo string quartet and string orchestra. It is in two movements (one slow one fast) that are played without a break. I spent ten years at the Yehudi Menuhin School (a specialist music school for string and piano) growing up so this piece cannot help but be strongly influenced by the music I played in the school orchestra during this time. In particular the work is influenced by Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro Strauss’s Metamorphosen (fortwenty-three solo strings) and Tippett’s Concerto for Double String Orchestra although the harmonic language of the piece (which is essentially very jazzy) helps to obscure these musical references. In terms of extra musical inspiration the work was inspired by a poem by Ivan Goll called Bloodhound which includes the lines “Catch the dreams that fly off from me.... And savage the ankles of my fleeting angel” I was inspired by the idea of a “fleeting angel” which at a time when I had been having difficulties composing seemed very poignant: the angel of the poem seemed to be a poetic representation of my inspiration. The Dreams That Fly From Me was premiered by the Szymanowsky Quartet and the Northern Sinfonia (Bradley Creswick director) at Hovingham Hall on the 28th July 2013 as part of the 2013 Ryedale Festival.' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad

Largo In Homage to B.A.C.H. was commissioned by the Carmel Bach Festival 2013 and Music Director Paul Goodwin to whom the work is dedicated.COMPOSER NOTE:My very first idea was to use the BACH initials as a basis for the work - not as the melodic motif often used by composers but rather as a harmonic structure. This is possible because in the German musical tradition B stands for B flat and H for B natural. This led to the thought that there would be four short sections each led by a different soloist forming an emotional journey: Lamentoso (mournful) Ardente (fervent) Inquieto (restless) and Sereno (peaceful).TheDouble Bass leads the first section B. Lamentoso (B flat major). The Cello leads the next A. Ardente (A major) faster and higher in pitch to reflect the change of mood and when the Viola soloist urgently interrupts in C. Inquieto (C major) the scene is set for a big climax. In the final section H. Sereno (B minor) the mood persuaded by the Violin soloist quietens and eventually leads to a brief quote from the famous chorale from the St. Matthew Passion O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden which ends the work in calm and peace with a 'tierce de Picardie'.In turn each soloist carries the linear activity as protagonist on this emotional journey and the accompaniment to each section is dominated by the ?tonality? indicated. But there is also a mysterious ?misty? overlay only dissipating after the Viola?s tempestuous climax. The cluster of notes that makes up this ?mist? is formed from the octatonic scale in each case incorporating notes of the triad of the relative section to determine its tonality (B flat major C major etc).Each section therefore uses only the notes of the octatonic scale1 associated with it - until the Viola begins to incorporate a chromatic scale2 - and it is only in the final section that the familiar diatonic scale 3 appears and the mist is dissipated. Judith Weir: My Piano Quartet (2000) is part of an extended series of works for piano and strings which I have written over the last twenty years - although I didn¹t know it was going to be a series when I wrote the first of these works Music for 247 Strings in 1980. During this period it has been far more usual for composers to write for mixed wind and string ensembles. Les Citations by Henri Dutilleux is a diptych for Oboe Harpsichord Double Bass and Drums. Composed in 1985 for the Aldeburgh Festival this diptych is composed of two pieces: I. For Aldeburgh 85 and II. From Janequin to Jehan Alain. Very enigmatic this piece is very difficult to play and requires a very good level of theory. It is however perfect for concerts or recitals. The third section which was later added to this piece is not part of this book which only contains the scores for the first and second part for each instrument. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his workwinning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers amongst many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata two symphonies the Cello concerto 'Tout un monde lointain' (A whole distant world) the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet 'Ainsi la nuit' (Thus the night).
