This piece could be best described as a classically constructed piece with a jazz attitude. The tonal language has more to do with 20th century chamber music than jazz, as do the form and the structure of the movements. The rhythmic language probably comes more from jazz than from the classical area, although at times the piece could go either way. The same could be said for the phrasing and articulation.

Subtitled A Little Suite for Four, the first movement features a unison melody written in B minor. In the second movement, a leitmotiv with variations and the use of repeated jazz phrases is presented; all four instruments take turns in assuming primary and supporting roles. The third movement is a ballad-like theme featuring soprano and baritone sax sharing a pleasant conversation. The fourth movement goes on a joyful melodic ride passing through all the saxophones parts, one after the other.

This original composition features a jaunty rhythmic conversation between the baritone and the three other voices, an infectious melody, and an improvised jazz solo for soprano saxophone. Arranged for SATB saxophone quartet.

A major addition to the saxophone concerto repertoire, Zwilich’s three-movement work is inspired by her early experience playing in big bands, along with a love of rich textures and driving rhythms interrupted by striking silences. The centerpiece slow movement is scored for only the soloist and the ensemble’s sax section, with all other players tacet. A large-size full score, and a solo part with piano, are available separately.

Inspired by the paintings of impressionist Henri Matisse and featuring the alto saxophone, The Dance is the first movement of Three Conversations With Matisse. Along with the well known Matisse painting of the same name, this unique musical statement can be described as forbidding, menacing, tribal and ritualistic. Written for the accomplished saxophone soloist, the band accompaniment is well within the technical range of most high school, university and community ensembles. A powerful and welcome addition to the saxophone and concert band repertoire!

Inspired by the command and structure of two Henri Matisse paintings under the name The Music Lesson, this powerful work for alto saxophone and band will become a staple of the repertoire. From the strict structure of the opening piano statement to the classically influenced melodic interplay with the saxophone, the piece moves through a flowing musical environment highlighted by a virtuosic cadenza. The recapitulation of the initial melodic line completes our music lesson and provides a strong conclusion to Three Conversations With Matisse, a suite for alto saxophone and band.

I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. In fact, my first name Yukiko means snow girl. My parents gave me this name because it was snowing on the day I was born. Before I started to write the piece, various images depicting the scenery of a snowy morning developed in my mind. Imagine that there is no wind, no sound, and it is a very clear morning. I heard the sound of an organ playing a traditional chorale somewhere from a distance. This is the scenery of my imagination for this piece. You will find many inner melodies, dialogues and conversations between the instruments throughout the piece. Listen carefully to the other instruments and stay in tune while you play.I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. Inspired by The Blue Window by Henri Matisse, this lyrical statement for alto saxophone and band is a subdued departure from the more colorful and powerful movements of Three Conversations With Matisse. Reflective and poignant, your soloist, ensemble and audience will be quietly enthralled in a musical setting that harkens to days gone by. Simply stated....beautiful.

Expect the unexpected in this major new work for Saxophone quartet and band by James Curnow. Built on a grand thematic plane, this tour de force employs the full range of expression. Gleaming modernity; dark modality; rhythms ranging from tentative to deliberate; and throughout, a sense of mysterious expectation for what is next to come. Expectations are fulfilled with the Presto finale. Not every band is capable of playing at this level, but if yours is, consider breaking new ground with DIALOGUES.In Dialogues voor saxofoonkwartet, harmonieorkest en slagwerk ontvouwen zich levendige dialogen tussen de solisten, maar ook het harmonieorkest komt in dit expressieve, veeleisende werk ruimschoots aan bod.
