The solos in this book are all based on melodies composed by women. They are especially well suited to performance on the soprano recorder, and they provide excellent material for developing skills in rapid tonguing, extended breath-control, phrasing, and the playing of high notes. Although arranged primarily for soprano recorder, most of these solos can be played on tenor or alto recorder. On the alto, use C fingerings. Three of the worlds most famous melodies are here: Mildred Hills Happy Birthday originally Good Morning to You , Euphemia Allens- Chopsticks originally The Celebrated Chop Waltz , and Effie Corcketts Rock-a-Bye, Baby. Less well known delights include Faustina Hodges- Because Im Twenty-Five and Florence Percys Fly Away, as well as Amanda Aldridges Dance of the Warriors-and the list goes on and on. A separate flute edition is available.

This exceptional collection of 41 truly beautiful airs and ballads from the British Isles offers both well-known tunes by the prolific blind Irish harpist, Turlough Oâ??Carolan and rarely heard melodies by anonymous composers; all have stood the test of time. Arranged for soprano or tenor recorder, these include Oâ??Carolanâ??s classically influenced â??Lord Inchiquinâ? and â??Eleanor Plunkettâ? as well as â??O Gentle Doveâ? and â??Cuckoo Dearâ?â?? both examples of the strong tradition of song in Wales. Among other tunes, the haunting modal melodies of â??The Dark Slender Boyâ? and â??Enchanted Valleyâ? express the melancholic heart and soul of the British Isles.A few of these songs have taken on a life of their own in modern times. â??Bonny at Mornâ?, a popular traditional tune of northern England and Scotland, was arranged for soprano voice and harp by the 20th century British composer, Benjamin Britten. â??The Skye Boat Songâ? originally recounted Bonnie Prince Charles Edward Stuartâ??s journey to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the historic Battle of Culloden. Later, the song evolved into a lilting lullaby and was more recently used as the theme song for the popular Outlander television series.Departing slightly from recorder notation practice, author Marcia Diehl has judiciously arranged these melodies complete with spare slur markings to aid the amateur player in authentically and musically rendering these tunes.

Jazz Conception is a new and exciting way for players at all levels to learn the language of jazz! Each book/mp3 set features 21 solo etudes based on chord changes to standards and blues. The same 21 etudes transposed and adapted for the main jazz instruments.See and hear how a well known soloist phrases and articulates and play along with or without the soloist on the audio recordings.Play along with one of today's finest, swinging New York rhythm sections: Mike LeDonne on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums.Start out fairly easy, then get progressively more difficult.Use the etudes as a bridge to solos of the masters that are usually more complicated and involved.Learn melodies and lines that will give you a solid jazz vocabulary and musicality.Use the book/mp3 set for private lessons, for self-study, or in any combination up to a full jazz ensemble, including flute and clarinet. If you are more advanced you may want to use the book to develop your sight reading abilities, for transcribing the etudes off the audio recordings (then check against the book) or for just having fun playing along with a great jazz rhythm section.Use as an improvisation study, learning how to construct a swinging, logical solo - works especially well in combination with the Study Guide. The Jazz Conception series is also perfectly suited for the class room. It can be used to develop younger students' jazz style in a big band or small group. In an improvisation class the teacher can use the etudes as studies in improvisation. The Study Guide provides an analysis of each etude, along with practice assignments for each etude.
