Music for a Celebration

‘Bi-Millennial Celebration’ has been composed to honour the 2000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Nijmegen. This work consists of three continuous movements. The first movement depicts the arrival of the Romans and the founding of Nijmegen. The second movement portrays the rustic and idyllic countryside surrounding the city. A musical celebration from these areas to the city of Nijmegen comes to life in the third movement. In this festive march one can easily distinguish the traditional Dutch anniversarysong ‘Lang zal ze leven’.

Celebration, a 4-movement suite, was written for and premiered by Gerry Mulligan at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Lübeck, Germany in 1994. Recorded by Bob Brookmeyer and the New Art Orchestra on New Works (Challenge CHR 70066), featuring Scott Robinson, baritone sax. 'The good will and beautiful playing of the musicians can not be described in words... just music. They have my eternal gratitude for making my life and music shine.' Bob Brookmeyer Bob Brookmeyer (b. 1929) began writing music at age 14 and also began playing the valve trombone, arriving in NY in 1952. After joining Stan Getz in 1953, he replaced Chet Baker in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, remaining with Mulligan for nine years, writing much of the music for the Concert Jazz Band. With Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, he wrote ABC Blues, Willow Weep For Me and St. Louis Blues, all seminal additions to the big band literature. After returning from California in 1978, he became Musical Director of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and wrote some of the finest music for that band including American Express, Ding Dong Ding, First Love Song, Hello and Goodbye, and Skylark. In the 1980s he wrote for both Jazz and Classical Orchestras and in 1994 formed the New Art Orchestra, an 18-piece ensemble of mainly European musicians. They have recorded two CDs for the Challenge label and commenced touring in 2001. A book on Composition is in the works and a DVD on Band Teaching is also planned. Fanfare and Celebration was commissioned by the Brass Band of the Western Reserve (Dr Keith M. Wilkinson director) to celebrate their 15th anniversary. Based in north-west Ohio the band was formed in 1997 and was competing in the Championship Section of the North American Brass Band Championships in less than three years. The first performance of Fanfare and Celebration took place in Akron Ohio on November 10th 2012.The opening Fanfare features the cornet section in two groups standing either side of the band. A central horn theme brings a change of mood before the cornets take the lead once more. Celebration follows seamlessly andcontinues the declamatory style until a cantando theme in uneven meter is introduced. A transformed recapitulation ushers in a return of the Fanfare to close the work.

Depuis sa création l?orchestre n?a jamais cessé de participer activement à la vie florissante de la cité se produisant lors de concerts en intérieur ou en plein air de parades ou de certains événements spéciaux.À la demande de Jim Culbertson directeur musical de l?orchestre Philip Sparke fut chargé d?écrire une pièce qui illustre la longue et riche histoire de la formation à travers un répertoire varié qui s?étend de l?universclassique avec ses ouvertures et marches jusqu?aux œuvres originales et arrangements d?œuvres récents.A Midwest Celebration s?inspire de quelques célèbres ouvertures orchestrales du XIXe siècle écrites par de grands compositeurs tels que Berlioz Verdi et Suppé. L?introduction est florissante. Tout s?apaise lorsqu?apparaît une mélodie aux courbes harmonieuses jouée par les cors les clarinettes et les saxophones. Mais à peine commence-t-il à se développer que le thème est brutalement interrompu par l?intervention des trompettes qui ouvrent un vertigineux passage Vivace illuminé par des fanfares brillantes (cuivres) et une profusion d?éléments d?ornementation (bois). Les cors reprennent l?exposition de la mélodie initiale soutenus par la douceur ondulante des flûtes. Soudain les lignes mélodiques du Vivace resurgissent et balayent la musique pour progresser vers leur intensité maximale point de rencontre entre les deux thématiques qui mènent le composition vers sa conclusion.
