As a composer, Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck and Grand Duke of Spain. All of his quartets feature a prominent first violin part and the Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the century in A-B-A form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked rondo. This lively Rondeau from Bologne's Six String Quartets, Op. 1 is a classic seven-part rondo with an ABACAB’A formula. The ‘A’ sections are set in G Major, ‘B’ in D Major, and ‘C’ in G Minor. As was typical of the Classical style, the primary melody is heard mainly in first violin, while other sections provide supporting harmonic and rhythmic roles. The essence of the string quartet scoring is retained by having the bass double the cello part. This makes more of this significant composer’s music accessible to school ensembles, resulting in a charming concert selection appropriate for concert or festival.

Right at the beginning of the overture, Telemann comes up with a surprising idea. After the -'bare' entry of the wind section, the string tutti do not join in the playing until the third bar. The 'harlequinade' often appearing in Telemann's overture suites obtains its attraction not least from syncopes and from a permanent change of tone colour. The 'Espagniol' whose title prom-ises a bit of urbanity turns out to be a saraband, the 'Bourree en Trompette' justifies its name by the tone repetitions typical of trumpet music. In the context of the whole, the 'Sommeille', a harmonically unusual movement in C minor, is almost a piece across the border. Even in this gently rocking piece, Telemann is not at a loss for unobtrusive wit when he lets the upper parts die down shortly before the end, only a single bass tone represents the last chord.

Sonata 1 opens with a movement marked Sostenuto expressing to perfection the melancholy gracefulness associated with B minor. This is followed by a vivacious Allegro, kaleidoscopic in its ever-changing rhythmic patterns. The sonata concludes with a charming homage to the French style in the form of a gavotte en rondeau. The opening movement of Sonata 2, which has some exquisite harmonic turns, displays what Quantz called the prächtig (magnificent) style, with a pompously striding bass and heavily dotted rhythms for the flute. The following Allegro moderato features jaunty syncopations interspersed with rapid flurries of demisemiquavers. Balicourt concludes with a sparkling ‘applause finale’, frothy but never trivial.

The Andante opening Sonata 5 in D major, with its delicately chiselled, ever-changing rhythms in the flute line, exemplifies to perfection the galant style. The light-footed Allegro assai that follows looks back to Quantz and even Vivaldi. Balicourt concludes the sonata with his most original movement in terms of structure. This consists of two Presto sections enclosing a Grazioso ‘core’ in D minor. Unexpectedly, the second Presto, starting as if a simple da capo repeat of the first, quickly diverges; its throwaway, staccato ending is a real audience-pleaser. | Sonata 6, in E major, opens with a lyrical Andante that almost breathes the air of the Classical style. The second movement, in contrast, is a typically baroque Siciliana, moving to E minor and displaying a rich harmonic palette. The finale is a variation rondo (rondeau varié) in which both repeats of the refrain are ornamented in different ways. As Balicourt’s description, Alla Polonese, conveys, the rhythm is that of a Polonaise, a stately but slightly exotic dance that had become popular throughout Europe after the electors of Saxony, starting with Friedrich August I, assumed the Polish crown.
