Though not as familiar as other holiday carols, this ancient melody has an intrinsic beauty in both its shape and harmonic support. Reflecting those elements, this arrangement creates an evocative sound world. The mood is inspired by viewing the expanse of the night sky. Throughout history, we as humans are connected, in a sense, by the fact that we look up at the same pattern of stars today as those who created this ancient tune so many years ago, which suggests a point of connection over time. In this arrangement you will find a sense of wonder and awe as the melody weaves its way between consonance and dissonance. The re-imagining of this medieval carol reflects the timeless nature of the Christmas season. Students will work on sustaining long tones and tuning non-traditional chords in this choral-like setting for string orchestra. The melody flows between all the parts with short musical interludes between.Though not as familiar as other holiday carols, this ancient melody has an intrinsic beauty in both its shape and harmonic support. A poem is a powerful thing—it can touch the heart in ways that mere words cannot. But a lyric poem has the benefit of a custom soundtrack, so listeners get to experience the words with the added emotional power of music. The choral art is a magical synergy: the poet's heart, borne aloft by the genius of the composer's music, expertly interpreted by the director, internalized and brought to life by the singers, and then carried as a gift into the spirit of the listener. When it all works like it's supposed to, it is wondrous. — Charles Anthony Silvestri, from the Preface A Silver Thread is a comprehensive collection of Silvestri's lyric poetry, written between 2001–2018, including texts commissioned by choral composers and ensembles, as well as many new and unset poems available here all together for the first time. Lyricist, poet, clinician, artist, and educator, CHARLES ANTHONY SILVESTRI is a lecturer in Ancient and Medieval History at Washburn University. He currently lives with his family in Lawrence, Kansas. For more, visit: www.charlesanthonysilvestri.com.

The melody of The Friendly Beasts (“Orientis Partibusâ€) originated in twelfth-century France and has been attributed to Pierre de Corbeil, Bishop of Sens. The song migrated to England by the thirteenth century, where its popularity grew and in the early twentieth century the familiar English words were added. The melody has been set in both quadruple and triple meter and is presented in both meters here. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) included the carol in his English Hymnal (1906).The words in both the original Latin and modern English versions pay homage to the place of animals in the Christmas story. The carol has also been known as The Donkey Carol and The Animal Carol. This setting is intended to reflect the Medieval origins of the melody. Some freedom of tempo would be appropriate during the “chant†version of the melody (mm. 6–18). Adding poco ritardando at m. 28, at the discretion of the director, should lead to a stricter tempo in mm. 31–53, in the manner of a medieval round dance. A gentle approach to the performance is appropriate. Finger cymbals could be added to or replace all or part of the triangle part, again at the director’s discretion.

Via Crucis is one of the most outstanding religious masterpieces from Liszt-s late creative period, and it depicts the story of the fourteen stations of Jesus' suffering. The work was not released during the composer-s lifetime due to its unusual and daring new sonorities. Based on his own dating, Liszt completed the composing process on February 26, 1879 in Budapest. The piece was originally written as fifteen short movements for solo vocalists, choir, and organ or harmonium, and its text was compiled by Liszt's partner, Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, using biblical excerpts, two medieval Latin hymns and two German Lutheran chorales. This volume, edited by Imre Mezo, contains German, English and Hungarian prefaces, as well as critical notes in English, which reveal valuable details about the history of the work.

This edition unites all the purely instrumental parts of Rameau’s comdie-ballet “Les Paladins†for performance as a suite in the concert hall.In view of the wealth of the work’s musical treasures and the stylistic innovations – similar to the “Borades†– the rather frosty reception of the premiere series in the spring of 1760 seems completely incomprehensible to us today. It led to this stage work not being performed again until well into the 20th century. The story that the comdie-ballet tells is based on a fable by La Fontaine, “Le Petit chien qui secoue de l’argent et des pierreries†(i.e. “The little dog who shakes silver and stonesâ€). In medieval Veneto, the guardian Anselme undermines the love affairs of his ward Argies. Scenes of tragic expression are contrasted with folk-comic ones; and last but not least, the sexually ambiguous fairy Manto may have caused difficulties for the bold work at the Paris Opra. This critical edition is based on the corresponding volume issued in the series “Opera omnia Rameau†(BA 8870-01). Since “Les Paladins†remained unpublished during Rameau’s lifetime and was also not included in the “Œuvres complètesâ€, this is the first edition of the work. It satisfies both scholarly demand and the practical needs of musicians. The orchestral parts are available on hire.

Taken from a collection of medieval folktales, the Hansel and Gretel libretto was based on an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The story features two quick-witted and capable children—a brother and sister who face many difficult times, including hunger and abandonment. Looking for food to eat, the children get lost in the forest and wake up only to meet more danger in disguise. In the happy ending, Hansel and Gretel are found in the forest by their parents. All together, they sing thanks and praise, expressing joy and gratitude for their good fortune. The ancient story of Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale with true relevance in the world today. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.

Work for Solo Piano. The composer writes: 'The Masque of the Red Death' was commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff. The title refers to the short story with the same title by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's story about the plague terrifying a masquerade party was only one inspiration for the music, and my piece is in no way programmatic - even despite the very fast staccato clouds, plague bells and medieval-dance fragment that can be heard.
