Haydn wrote the Missa Sancti Nicolai in 1772, probably for the name day of prince Nicolaus Esterhazy. This work is on a larger scale than the other missae breves, and in the orchestra two oboes and two horns join the strings. At the very beginning of the Kyrie the gentle, pastoral character which distinguishes this work is established. Haydn reprises the music of the Kyrie in the Dona nobis pacem to round off the work. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4060500.

With the Missa Sancti Nicolai and the Missa Sancti Joannis de Deo, his last to missae breves, Haydn also achieved masterworks in this category, and during his lifetime they numbered among his most popular works. This so called Little Organ Solo Mass has never been accused of being unsuitable for church use despite the text stratification in the Gloria and Credo. Inspite of the unusual brevity of the Gloria (31 bars), the text setting still shows musical differentation. The strength of the composition lies in its expressive ability to force the listener under its spell with magic power. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. Score available separately - see item CA.4060000.

Within approximately six weeks Haydn, in 1801, composed his Creation Mass as the fifth of altogether six late missae solemnes commissioned by his employer, Prince Nikolaus II. Esterhazy. The sobriquet Creation Mass is not authentic, but it is probably based on the quotation in the Gloria taken from the oratorio Die Schopfung. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4061100.

Despite all of its folk-line simplicity of melody, Haydn's first mass contains a pious note that, just like its youthful verve, still was to hold fascination for him in his late years when, in 1805, he re-orchestrated his first work. The first version of the mass is considered to have been composed in 1749 or 1750. It was around the same time that Pope Benedict XIV treated questions concerning church music in his encyclical Annus qui in which he condemned the frequently operatic style of church music and demanded liturgical music that revealed an awareness of its religious purpose and that sought to fulfill it with simple means of musical expression. In its liturgical attitude Haydn's first mass is anchorded in this point of view (that to a great extent corresponded to the general standpoint of the churches of the eighteenth century). Score and part available separately - see item CA.4060100.

The Missa in tempore belli by Joseph Haydn is an interesting work in several respecst. Firstly this setting of the Mass provides pointers to the situation of Austrian church music as it had been affected by imperial decrees. Secondly the political situation, with the imminent invasion of Austria by Napoleon's troops, had reached a crisis point which is reflected in the description of this composition as a Mass in time of war. Last but not least, this work is the first of the group of six settings of the Latin Mass which, together with the oratorios The Creation and The Seasons, form the body of Haydn's last period vocal works, and which unquestionably belong among his supreme creative achievements. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.4060700.

The Missa Sti Bernardi von Offida (1796) stands at the beginning of Joseph Haydn's late works. The Mass earned its nickname because in the Sanctus Haydn quoted the then well-known sacred hymn Heilig, heilig, heilig. The text of the music for this critical edition presents the work with the complete scoring for winds, including the clarinets and horns missing in the autograph score and the first edition. The optional horn parts are contained in the appendix and as part of the performance material. However, these parts cannot be dispensed with if we wish to fully re-create the Mass within the context of Eisenstadt. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4060800.
