Music for wind ensemble also know as Harmoniemusik played an important part in Mozart’s Austria. Wind ensembles were not only cheaper to employ but they also were suitable for outdoor performance and so appealed to the lesser nobility of the time.Mozart composed the three great wind serenades during his first two years in Vienna with the first of them the Serenade No.10 in B flat K.361 seeing a huge expansion in terms of instrumentation and length. Instead of six (or eight) instruments this serenade is scored for thirteen instruments which include a string double bass. The use of the string bass suggests this work waswritten to be performed indoors unlike those which had preceded it.Available here is a highly authoritative Eulenburg miniature score of Mozart’s Serenade No.10 in B flat K.361 as edited by Harry Newstone which is the definitive reference source for study perusal and performance preparation.

Serenade für 13 Instrumente-An announcement in the Wiener-Zeitung read: ?Concert. Today [23 March 1784] Herr [Anton] Stadler Sr. presently in the service of His Majesty the Emperor will hold a concert for his own benefit at the Royal Imperial National Court Theatre in which among other select pieces he will present a grand work for wind-band of a quite special character composed by Herr Mozart.? That this was almost certainly four movements from the present Serenade in B-flat major K.361 is suggested by an account of the occasion published some months later which states ?Today I heard a composition by Herr Mozart in 4 movements for wind ensemble . . . comprising 13 instruments: 4 horns 2oboes 2 bassoons 2 clarinetts 2 basset horns and a contrabass viol. . . .?Much music of the serenade-divertimento-cassation-Nachtmusik type was written in a light style and intended for social occasions rather than formal concerts. In such a context K.361 is striking for its seriousness of artistic content its length (seven movements lasting nearly an hour) and its extended instrumentation (most wind-band music of the period calls for five to eight or nine players not thirteen). Mozart was about to be married when hepulled this Wind piece out of his hat. Yet the results are far removed from the detached courtly style of the Serenade: the work one of the jewels of the Wind repertoire opens full of earnestness and profundityin the gloomy key of c minor. The high opinion Mozart had of this octet is evident in the fact that he later arranged it for String quintet.

This is perhaps the most famous and popular of all of Mozart's works Serenade No.13 in G K.525 'Eine Klein Nachtmusik' (A Little Night Music) is a beautiful uplifting and gloriously melodic serenade. Originally for String Orchestra this version for Violin and Piano has been arranged by Carl Herrmann.

for two Oboes 2 Clarinets 2 Horns and 2 Bassoons-The Serenade in E-flat K.375 exists in two versions one for two clarinets two horns and two bassoons and another for the same forces plus two oboes forming an octet.From Mozart himself we know a fair amount about the occasion that led to the first six-instrument version of this work and about its early performances. Written for the sister-in-law of the court painter Hickl it probably originated toward the end of September or the beginning of October in 1781 and was first performed on 15 October the name-day of St. Theresa.The octet version probably arose in the summer of the following year. It is far more than a mechanical expansion of the sextetwith the oboes merely reinforcing the clarinets colla parte. Not only did Mozart take advantage of the occasion to make changes in the articulation and the dynamics he also altered the work’s melodic substance and formal design. The two additional high-register instruments allowed him to achieve more subtle distinctions and gradations of timbre thereby enabling him for example to vary the timbral homogeneity of the two clarinets.
