The score has been prepared using the very popular new edition of Beethoven?s collected Piano sonatas in the Wiener Urtext edition and supersedes the earlier edition UT50085.As Beethoven?s original manuscript version has not been preserved this edition is based upon the first edition published in 1805 and the most significant early reprints whose careful editing procedure has been a major influence on this edition. It marks the consummation of his Classical style yet also already alludes to his Heroic Period with its intensely Romantic characteristics. Composed in the ?tragic? key of C minor it foreshadows the expressive drama of later masterworks such as the Fifth Symphony or the Coriolan Overture. The Piano Sonata No. 5 in C Minor (Op.10 No.1) was written in 1798 and dedicated to Anna Margarete von Browne the wife of a Russian diplomat who was Beethoven's main patron at the time.
