This new Wiener Urtext Edition of J.S. Bach's English Suites addresses particularly the problematic question of extinct secondary sources. With Bach's autograph no longer surviving the edition attempts to extract the original text from a plethora of manuscript copies by means of detailed comparisons and deduction. The edition attempts to amend passages that appear to be corrupted in all available sources and by careful reasoning bring them closer to Bach's probable intentions. All editorial decisions are documented in an extensive critical commentary with the aim of enabling the readers to conduct their own critical evaluationof the musical text. Indispensable notes on authentic performance practice contain valuable information for the performer.

Minuet BWV 929 comes from the collection entitled Small Preludes and Fughettas and was probably written as teaching material. from Cantata No. 147-Johann Sebastian Bach is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. His music is revered for its technical command artistic beauty and intellectual depth. This chorale movement is one of his most enduring works however the melody was originally composed before Bach’s time in 1642 by Johann Schop. Utilising the already existing melody Bach wrote this setting of Jesu Joy Of Man’s Desiring in 1716 as the 10th and last movement of the church cantata ‘Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben’ (BWV 147) one of the over three hundred cantatas written by the master of the Baroque period.This edition of the familiar melody which is often performed at weddings and Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter is arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ. All four verses of the lyrics are provided in English translation along with the original version in German.

The importance of this work group in his own organ oeuvre is confirmed by the many transmitted sources: hardly any autographs, but all the more copies. The genesis of the works and the question of versions associated with it are described at length in the introduction. In his new edition, editor David Schulenberg occasionally makes a new evaluation of the transmitted sources. To do so, he based himself as faithfully as possible on the manuscripts that can be traced back to Bach or to his circle. Here the American Bach expert generally chooses one source as his principal one. Divergences from other sources are documented in the Commentary. On the whole, the new Urtext edition sometimes also emends some long-cherished readings of ornaments, voice leading and notation.
