Béla Bartók composed his four-volume series comprising short pieces for beginner pianists, For Children, between 1908 and 1910. It consists of folksong and nursery song arrangements the first two volumes utilize Hungarian music and the latter two are of Slovak origin. Bartók revised the series during the last years of his life (1943 to 1945). This collection contains easy arrangements of ten pieces from For Children for violin and piano they can either be played separately or one after the other as a suite. These arrangements are by the legendary violinist Ede Zathureczky (1903-1959), who regularly gave concerts with Bartók during the 1930s.

In 1916, as part of the series Az elemi zongorajáték gyakorlati tananyaga [Practical Repertory for Elementary Piano Playing], Rózsavölgyi & Co. published Bartók's selection of twelve pieces from the collection usually given the title Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach. A revised 1923 edition added one more piece. The contents of our edition are an identical reprint of the 1923 version, including Bartók's in-depth preface in both Hungarian and German and the footnotes he added to the individual pieces (also provided here in an English translation).Johann Sebastian Bach gave his second wife Anna Magdalena two manuscript music-books which contain, besides his own works,compositions by other contemporaries. The present selection includes 13 pieces from the second book (dated to 1725). In der beim Budapester Musikverlag Rózsavölgyi & Co. erschienenen Reihe Az elemi zongorajáték gyakorlati tananyaga [Praktischer Lehrstoff des elementaren Klavierspiels] wurde 1916 eine aus 12 Stu cken bestehende Auswahl Béla Bartóks aus der unter dem Titel Notenbu chlein fu r Anna Magdalena Bach bekannten Sammlung veröffentlicht. Deren im Jahre 1923 veröffentliche revidierte Ausgabe wurde durch ein weiteres Stu ck ergänzt. Der Inhalt der vorliegenden Ausgabe deckt sich mit dem der Edition das Jahres 1923 (die Noten bringen wir als Reprint) einschließlich des Vorworts Bartóks in ungarischer und in deutscher Sprache sowie seiner Randnotizen zu den einzelnen Stu cken, die wir auch in englischer Übersetzung wiedergeben.

Bartók composed the Sonatina for solo piano in his 'Romanian year' of 1915; this was when he also composed the set of Romanian Folk Dances and the Romanian Christmas Carols. In this relatively short piano piece (lasting three to four minutes), the composer used instrumental folk music collected in Transylvania. In the first movement, Bartók conjures up two bagpipes, and, in the second, a fiddler playing for a bear dance. The first edition of the Sonatina was published by Rózsavölgyi in 1919, and the composer premieredthe work in 1920 in Pozsony (Bratislava). This separate print is based on volume 38 of the Bartók Complete Critical Edition published in 2019, in which Henle Verlag of Munichand Editio Musica Budapest published the piano works composed between 1914 and 1920. The musical text is accompanied by a preface in English and Hungarian by László Somfai, and by editorial remarks which not only discuss the sources but also offer practical advice for performers.
