Wiener Urtext-Franck's Sonata is one of the most famous works in the chamber music repertoire. This new Wiener Urtext Edition is based on the first edition with Franck's final corrections. Inconsistencies between the Piano score and the solo part are due to annotations by the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe the dedicatee who was given the work as a wedding present. This version likely to have been authorized by Franck is published for the first time in an Urtext edition. Günther Ludwig in his preface suggests a carefully considered cerebral approach to this highlight of the repertoire.

Wiener Urtext-These sonatas are among the epoch-making works of the Violin repertoire and nowadays figure in the standard repertoire of every violinist. It is all the more surprising therefore that until now there has been no Urtext edition of such significant works. The score is based on a first edition supervised by Corelli himself. From what we know of performance practice in Corelli's time however more was expected of the violinist than just a musical reading of the printed score: it was customary to add ornamentation verging on improvisation with embellishment and 'variations as desired'. The original score is therefore presented here withthe earliest documented ornamentation from a reprint published by Roger in Amsterdam in 1708. This ornamentation is not meant to be slavishly imitated but to stimulate the player to find their own creative and stylistically confident interpretation of the score. As Roger did not specify any ornaments for the sonatas in the second volume the 'variations as desired' used by Corelli’s pupil Geminiani have been reproduced with the ninth Sonata as an example. Advice on performance is given by the Cologne baroque specialist Reinhard Goebel. This advice does not only apply to ornamentation but also to articulation bowings and more besides calling for specific markings in the separate Violin part. The realisation of the Continuo part echoes the fashions of that time. Here too advice on performance is meant to stimulate free interpretation by the Continuo player. A figured Bass part is included for the player who prefers to read the accompaniment from figures.

Georg Friedrich Handel's Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo belong to the core repertoire of Baroque Violin music some of them even being among the most famous repertoire pieces of their time. The new edition in the Wiener Urtext Edition series is based on Handel's autographs contemporary copies and first prints. In addition to Handel's nine violin sonatas it contains two minuets for Violin and Basso Continuo which have been handed down in the environment of the sonatas. Apart from the solo Violin part and a Continuo score with a realised easily playable Basso Continuo the edition also includes a figured Bass partwhich gives experienced Continuo players the opportunity to improvise on the Basso Continuo part. The notes on interpretation by the renowned Baroque expert Reinhard Goebel provide insight into a sonata performance that was common practice at the time of Handel.

Sonatas Wq 75-78 Arioso Wq 79 Fantasie Wq 80-Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for Violin and Harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036 date back to the years of study with his father yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for Harpsichord (Piano) obbligato and Violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71–74 and BWV 1036 but alsothe arrangements of the trios Wq 143–145 for Violin and Harpsichord most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs as well as a – previously ignored – early version of Wq 71 which like BWV 1036 grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert together with Joseph Hellmesberger but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works C. P. E. Bach bridged the gap between the late Baroque sonatas of his father and the early classical 'Klaviersonate mit begleitender Violine' [Piano Sonata with Accompanying Violin].

Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo are among the most famous masterpieces of their kind. Unlike the closely related Suites for Violoncello Solo the Violin solos have survived in an autograph manuscript of the composer on the basis of which alone a largely reliable musical text is available. However this manuscript is a copy of previous draft copies or even further fair copies of the composer. Wiener Urtext Edition uses an early copyist's copy from Köthen as a secondary source which has not been valued very highly as a source until now. Despite its closeness to the extant autograph one cannot rule out thepossibility that this copy might be traced back to another original manuscript by Bach. At any rate some obvious mistakes of the extant fair copy can be clarified on the basis of its text; in addition it provides a number of articulations not indicated elsewhere (some even with alternatives) which are examples of how these works can be performed according to their time of origin. In the Notes of Interpretation Dagmar Glüxam explains the relationship between the musical-rhetorical contents of Bach's musical text and their adequate performance thus showing how absurd many a performance instruction of established interpretive editions is.

Schumann’s Violin Sonatas were taken up with enthusiasm very soon after they were first performed. The Second Sonata was described at the time as 'Second only to Beethoven's Sonata in A'. Sonatas Op. 105 and Op. 121 are now presented in the first volume of this Wiener Urtext edition. It is based on the score in the new complete Schumann edition which draws not only upon the authorised first editions of both works but also upon Schumann’s working manuscripts and – in the case of the 2nd Sonata – the score used by the engravers and extensive correspondence between the composer and the originalpublishers. Meticulous comparison of these original documents has made it possible to determine numerous details regarding dynamics and articulation. Schumann’s autograph manuscript has been of significant help in this respect. The edition is part of the ABRSM syllabus (grade 8).

Violon / Partition

Telemann's Fantasias for Solo Violon and his Fantasias for Solo Flute constitute a varied collection of twelve pieces, half of which follow the model of the 'sonata da chiesa' and the other half the model of the 'sonata da camara'.
