In a true performance piece, Igudesman starts us off, appropriately, with Jingle Bells, but a Jingle Bells heard through his ears. This polite opening quickly morphs into an Igudesman-style Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, followed by other surprises of sacred and secular bent. His opening note, Kind of Christmassy with a touch of Hannukah, is apt, as his (recommended) sung We Wish You a Merry Christmas leads directly into I Have a Little Dreidel. Timid violinists are advised to stick with the generic Silent Night (which, surprisingly, also makes an appearance here, along with Auld Lang Syne). True performers of advanced skills will want to work this oddity into their holiday program this year. Christmas Confusion is challenging for both players, but will delight audiences with surprising quotes from familiar materials.

A natural followup to Igudesman's first book of In My Garden (UE037200) presents another ten easy pieces inspired by fruits and vegetables. Whether for teaching or recital, enjoy violin musings on the potato, the blueberry, the orange, radish, and zucchini, and (yes) the ubiquitous broccoli. The violin part is easy to intermediate-level, and the piano accompaniments are suitable for teacher or a fellow student of intermediate skills.

The familiar Happy Birthday tune undergoes an Igudesman concert transformation. Stated simply enough, the melody immediately morphs into a Viennese waltz, a big band statement, a Bulgarian step dance, a Russian romp, and more. A touch of violinistic virtuosity leads to the fantastic finish. Make someone's birthday special!

Krenek's long life in music began as a conductor in German opera houses, which may explain his prodigious output of original operas (Jonny spielt auf, The Bell Tower, etc.). But his compositions include all instruments, from solo to orchestral, and cover a wide range of influences (neo-classical, 12-tone, neo-romantic, even jazz overtones). Universal Edition proudly presents two of Krenek's Sonates for solo Violin, the first from 1925, at about the time of his divorce from his first wife, Anna Mahler.
