From Songs Of Peace-The 14th-century Eucharistic text ‘Ave verum’ has been set to music by many composers over the centuries no doubt drawn to its vivid and powerful imagery. Todd first set the words (for SATB choir) in 2001 but this different setting is the fourth movement of a larger work Songs of Peace which was written in 2012 in memory of the composer’s mother. The unison first verse is introduces the beautiful melody which fits naturally into the lush harmony supplied in the piano part. A second often imitative part is added for the second verse though the piece doesn’t stray too far from its very approachable nature. There is occasional optional further divisi which adds extraharmonic effects when included.

No. 4 from The Same Flame-Commissioned by the Somerset England based charity Churchill Music! The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All fivemovements of The Same Flame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.Ideal for younger choirs due to its approachability voicing and focus on friendship All-weather friends is mostly in unison with some optional and approachable divisi.
