Les Paladinswas Rameau's last work premiered at the Academie royale de musique in 1760. Sharply criticized on account of its overtly comical libretto, the work was withdrawn after fifteen performances and was thus one of the most stinging failures in the composer's career. Seen from today's perspective, the public reception is hardly comprehensible for such an inventive work. Radically rejuvenating his writing, Rameau displays a youthful, playful personality, miles away from the critics reproaching him for being nothing but an old man in his dotage. One ban barely imagine such a work coming from the pen of a septuagenarian!Ra meau did not prepare the work for publication, and theOEuvres completesunder Camille Saint-Saens's general editorship did not include the work in the collection issued by Durand. The present volume ofOpera omnia Rameauis thus the first edition of Les Paladins.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extant, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is the second great keyboard master of the Baroque Age next to Couperin. His works are as unknown to pianists, with few exceptions, as they are famous among harpsichord players. The virtuosity and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the harpsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their interpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these Impressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instructions, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's (EB 8029) and Rameau's music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. Baroque dance forms and graceful character pieces (LaJoyeuse, L'Indifferente) are typical ofRameau's work. Simplifications to a small extent of the harpsichord setting and also of the omamentation in the original version were required, based on the teaching experience of the editor. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The Minuet on page 6 has been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series: what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the espective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. Indications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case by used subtly. The very precise fingerings have been adapted to the suggested phrasings and to the corresponding realisation of trills (according to the table). Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1980.

Thi s edition presents a further dramatic jewel for the stage by Jean-Philippe Rameau. It comes with a vocal score for study and rehearsals as well as with a compilation of the purely instrumental parts for performance as a suite in the concert hall. In view of the wealth of the work's musical treasures and the stylistic innovations - similar to theBoreades- the rather frosty reception of the premiere series in the spring of 1760 seems completely incomprehensible to us today. It led to this Comedie ballet not being performed until well into the 20th century. The story that the ballet tells is based on a fable by La Fontaine,Le Petit chien qui secoue de l'argent et des pierreries(i.e.The little dog who shakes silver and stones). In medieval Veneto, the guardian Anselme undermines the love affairs of his ward Argies. Scenes of tragic expression are contrasted with folk-comic ones; and last but not least, the sexually ambiguous fairy Manto may have caused difficulties for the bold work at the Paris Opera. The critical new edition published as part of theOpera omnia Rameauseries offers the final version, supplemented in the appendix by the variants of the original version. SinceLes Paladinsremained unpublished during Rameau's lifetime and was also not included in theOEuvres completes, this is the first edition of the work. It satisfies both scholarly demand and the practical needs of musicians.

In addition to three Motets for Soli, Choir and Orchestra only the Motet Laboravi has survived from the sacred music of Rameau. Laboravi was published in Rameaus Traite de l'harmonie reduite a ses principes naturels in the chapter about the fugue as an exampel. But she was probably composed around 1700. Transposed version (whole tone higher): Carus 3.352/40.

Rameau's only surviving opera based on a libretto by Voltaire has survived in two versions (1745 and 1746), whereby the 1745 version was long considered lost. Volume IV.12 of the seriesOpera omnia Rameaupresents a complete edition which enables performances of both versions. Voltaire refers to Metastasio in his libretto in that he wishes to liberate the opera from the gallant milieu and to make it a moralizing stage work that is equally edifying and political. After a prologue dedicated to envy personified, the tyrants Belus and Bacchus are chased out of the Hall of Fame and finally Trajan is crowned with laurels for defeating the rebels, forgiving them and ultimately turning the Hall of Fame into a public temple. The music contains many remarkable passages, such as a richly orchestrated overture, the famous monologueProfonds abimes du Tenarewith obbligato bassoons, and Trajan's artful final sceneRamage d'oiseaux.

The main body of the new edition of Les Indes galantes, published in Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR IV.2, 7), restores the version authorised by Rameau in 1736. This basic editorial decision has made it possible to present a fully coherent and authenticated reading of the work (after the adjustments from the earliest performances). All other versions before and after 1736 are gathered together in 19 complements.Sylvi e Bouissou's new edition differs markedly from previous modern editions and all existing recordings. With its complements she does justice to the performer's need for Rameau's various revisions while finally making accessible a version actually authorised by Rameau. For the first time it is presented in its complete stylistic and dramatic context.
