He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5016400.

These two quartets (ChB 5303 / 5304) have been drawn from the recently rediscovered Travel Album which Fanny Hensel and her husband Wilhelm Hensel kept on their lengthy journey to Italy in 1839/40. The little vocal works can be performed by a chorus as well as by soloists. They are being published here for the first time.Fanny Hensel's choral works not only stand up to comparison with any of the rich and varied choral works of the Romantic era - they also rank among the best. Very likely to become hits! (Musica).

Rome, 1839/40. Fanny Hensel finally fulfills her longing for Italy, and in her four rooms, well furnished, she writes a number of little piano pieces at an old, light-weight, played-out tin can of a piano. Fast forward to 1999: Christian Lambour presents four of these impressions, all within a medium range of difficulty, in a first edition as Roman Piano Pieces.

Originally, the present work - with a Latin text and the title Non nobis, Domine - was a gift written by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in November 1830 for the 25th birthday of his sister Fanny. Five years later he decided to have it printed, and his publisher Simrock urged him to produce a German translation as well. It is in this form that the setting of Psalm 115 has become known alongside four other Psalms of Mendelssohn's in a compositional scope ranging from church to concert hall. The Urtext edition is based on the main sources, the autograph and the first edition.

The Carus Classics series features outstanding CD productions from Carus' past library of recordings. The series has been designed exclusively by the well-known graphic artists Friedrich Forssman und Cornelia Feyll. The Philharmonia Chor Stuttgart under the direction of Helmut Wolf presents sacred vocal music from two highly gifted female composers: Formally, Fanny Hensel's Oratorio to words from the Bible is reminiscent of Bach and Handel, whereas it displays the clear tonal language of the early Romantic era. The two imposing psalms by Lili Boulanger are characterized by an impressive array of sound and by a moving intensity.
