Erschallet, ihr Lieder (BWV 172) is one of those early Bach cantatas which were often revived at Leipzig. The first performance of this work was given in Weimar 1714. Although only a few instrumental parts from this performance are extant, it may be assumed that at that time the cantata already had the form familiar to us from its first Leipzig revival. It was given in C major (church pitch, corresponding to D major in chamber pitch), and the first number was intended to be repeated at the end of the work.

The cantataAllein zu dir, Herr Jesu ChristBWV 33, composed for the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity in 1724, is now the only vocal work by Bach for which the complete source material from the time of composition can be published in facsimile. It is one of the few works by Bach for which material from the first performance survives almost complete. But this is held in different locations on several continents: the composition score is preserved in the Scheide Library at Princeton , US , the performance parts in the Bach- Archiv Leipzig and the libretto of 1724 in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg . All these components have now been published in a high-quality facsimile edition. This valuable edition, with a slip case, offers both specialists and lovers of Bach's music a unique insight into the composer's working methods and the changing performing circumstances he encountered. Additional information is contained in a detailed commentary (in German and English) by Christoph Wolff and Peter Wollny . BWV 33 belongs to the unique annual cycle of chorale cantatas composed by Bach in 1724/25, the second year of his Leipzig tenure. The cantata is one of the very few works where all the relevant source materials for the first performance have been preserved but are kept in various libraries throughout the world : The composing score is kept at the Scheide Library in Princeton, the vocal-instrumental performing parts at the Bach Archive Leipzig and the original libretto at the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg. Between 1717 and 1723 Johann Sebastian Bach composed Six Suites for Violoncello (BWV 1007 BWV 1012). Of these, the first three have been transcribed for bass guitar in this coursebook, which in itself is a considerable amount of work.

In 1725, J.S. Bach gave his second wife, Anna Magdalena, a Notenbüchlein - a collection of solo keyboard pieces and arias. Most of the keyboard pieces were composed by friends, colleagues, and his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The easier keyboard works were probably used to instruct their children, while the arias would have been performed by Anna Magdalena, who was a singer. For this edition, Edwin McLean has chosen and expertly edited the most popular and easier keyboard pieces. Originally, the pieces contained no dynamics and virtually no phrasing, which is typical of baroque harpsichord music and even early 18th-century fortepiano music. Sectional dynamics have been added editorially and may be changed at the discretion of the performer. A minimal amount of phrasing and articulation has also been added for clarity. This edition preserves the original notation for appoggiaturas, where small eighth or quarter notes resolve to the principal note. Ossias have been included to show how to play them; ossias also appear when needed for ornaments such as trills and mordents.
