Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously the percussion section has a conspicious role to play but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'. In consideration of Dr. Begian's Armenian heritage Nulli Secundus (“second to none”) is a suite of three variations based on the Armenian folk song Cilicia (My Homeland). Movements include: I. March Caprice (concert march in fantasy variationform) II. In Memoriam (honoring victims of the 1915-18 Armenian Genocide) and III. Finale (rapid paced set of variations). I pass it on my way to work as Idrive along the Henry Hudson parkway on the New York shore. Ever since my student days when I watched the progress of its construction this bridge has had for me an almost human personality and this personality is astonishinglyvaried assuming different moods depending on the time of day or night the weather the traffic and of course my own mood as I pass by.I have walked across it late at night when it was shrouded in fog and during thebrilliant sunshine hours of midday. I have driven over it countless times and passed under it on boats. Coming to New York City by air sometimes I have been lucky enough to fly right over it. It is difficult to imagine a moregracious welcome or dramatic entry to the great metropolis'. - William Schuman

The swing classic Sing Sing Sing which in 1937 was a major hit for the Benny Goodman Orchestra was written by its Trumpet player Louis Prima. Born in New Orleans Prima did not only later become known for his spectacular live and radio performances he also created his own jazz style - a mix of dixieland and swing. This arrangement for Concert Band brings the unforgettable sound of the big bands from the thirties back to life.

Constructed between 1915 and 1928 the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41) provides over 260 miles of scenic Florida beauty between Tampa and Miami. On the Tamiami Trail reflects on this journey and pays tribute to the Suncoast Concert Band of Sarasota (along the trail) and its director emeritus Leo Laier. The opening fanfare sets the mood and leads to the energetic first theme. Subsequently a Latin influence is introduced along with an expressive middle theme before returning to the energetic flavor of the opening strains. A dynamic and varied overture for winds. Dur: 6:15
