The music of the Duke Ellington Orchestra helped define the role of jazz in America. Here is a swingin' medley for young bands including the memorable titles: Take The A Train Don't Get Around Much Anymore Caravan Mood Indigo and It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing).

Only cave dwellers have missed the dance frenzy that has taken over the entertainment scene bringing the classic swing dancing of the '40's right back into American school dances. Based on the famous Canadian Brass version by master arranger Luther Henderson here is a wonderful adaptation for concert band by Michael Brown. Opening with a bluesy medium swing feel the tuba section is featured on the melodyalong with a small group of players. Mid-way through the arrangement the style changes to an up-tempo Dixieland style with the melody cleverly traded between various sections of the band. This rousing number is sure to be afavorite.

The master of jazz arranging Sammy Nestico pays tribute to America's most notable art form with this montage for concert band. Øivind Westby has written a number of excellent but demanding instrumental arrangements for Concert Band. In the present one, he has transcribed five of the most famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) grew up near Ipanema, the famous beach in Rio de Janeiro. His big break through and most creative period came in the 50?s and 60?s which gave him the status as the greatest Brazilian composer of all times. Together with Stan Getz and João and Astrud Gilberto he recorded one of the best selling jazz-albums of all times, an album which feature several of his most famous compositions. His inspiration includes another Brazilian great; Pixinguinha, but also classical composers like Frederick Chopin and Claude Debussy. He died in NYC in 1994 after composing approx. 400 works.
