This is an interesting book of arpeggio studies and interval studies that have a contemporary sound to them and at times are unpredictable. These develop different aspects of tongue level to a high degree similar to the later parts of Claude Gordon's Tongue Level Exercises.

From the forward: 'Jazz Basics Volume 1: Diatonic Exercises' is the first part of a series of books focusing on the most primary elements in jazz line construction. This series emphasizes developing harmonic knowledge related to Jazz improvisation. Each volume deals with a different aspect on improvisation. By combining these aspects you should be able to construct viable jazz lines. Although this series is designed for the aspiring improviser, experienced improvisers will also benefit from the study of this material.

This theoretical book is meant to improve contemporary jazz styles techniques for all musician players of modern jazz. We will divide this book into scale exercises, arpeggio exercises, jazz line phrases as well as contemporary chord progressions. Exercises consist of diatonic and chromatic exercises; and, line phrases, consist of jazz solos by great musicians such as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Freddy Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Farrel, Dave Liebman, Bob Berg, Michael and Randy Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Tom Harrel, Chris Potter, Brad Mehldau, Joey Calderazzo, Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis, Walt Weiskopf, Rich Perry, Seamus Blake, Alex Sipiagin and many other well known musicians these days. The majority of these exercises should be transposed to all twelve (12) tones, so we can achieve perfect coordination. Major chords, Minor chords and Dominant chords will be extended to their highest level, in scales, arpeggios and chromatic form. There will not be key signature centres, so we will work all exercises in accidental way. These exercises were made as an extension of my first book 'Improvise Now'. There are as well many improvisational lines transcribed from some of the previously mentioned musicians.

These melodious duets composed in the inimitable Williams musical style, for teacher and student, progressing from beginner to intermediate level. There has always been a deficiency in the number of easy (easier) duet books for trumpet. Ones that occupy a more narrow range and are approachable by players in their first few years of study. This one is an absolute classic.

The series starts on an intermediate easy level and progresses from there. This first book contains simple rhythms with very few technical problems on the horn. This book will hopefully sharpen the students' eye to the simple but tricky rhythms he or she will be confronted with throughout their musical career. Chord changes are also included on some of the studies with space for the student to improvise if he or she is so inclined.

Progressing from intermediate to more advanced levels of difficulty, these studies take the student through long tones, lip slurs and trills, interval and flexibility exercises. Useful for players of all levels.

'Improvisational Patterns: The Bebop Era' is a series of pattern books predicated on the belief that while certain patterns seem to transcend eras and styles, the greater body of improvisational material is of high specificity with regard to its time and place within the jazz continuum. The bebop era initiates the series since in the minds of many people, (the author included), this era is the common practice period of jazz music. While the patterns in this book are also highly specific, they enjoy a greater continuing currency than do the patterns of any other period in jazz's brief history. The many II V7, cycle and turnaround patterns are based on protracted studies of literally hundreds of solos by the jazz greats of the bebop era. Volume 1 is over 100 pages and volumes 2 and 3 are over 50 pages each, making this one of the biggest jazz improv books ever written.

Bob Nelson and Aaron Harris' '32 Original Duets,' from the Charles Colin Complete Modern Method includes Sixty-Six pages of classically oriented duets written for the intermediate-level player to develop independence and confidence in ensemble playing. If you are familiar with Bob Nelson's great collection of Advanced Duets and the great etude books of Aaron Harris you will have a very good idea of what to expect here. Very idiomatically written, very accessible and easy to read, and a great compliment to the contemporary duet literature for the trumpet.

After studying trumpet and cornet with such accomplished musicians as Louis Davidson (Cleveland Symphony), Herbert L. Clark (Famous Cornetist), Oscar B. Short (Soloist- GoldmanSousa - US Navy Band) and Bartlett L. Lyons (Sousa Band) - this list is a veritable who's who in the brass field, isn't it? And after having witnessed many times the solid effects of visual education, I commenced thinking about the possibilities of teaching music by means of pictures. The Chinese, in their own terse concise way, simply say, 'A picture is worth a thousand words', so perhaps that is enough said about the philosophy behind this instructional endeavour. But even the best of pictures - I should say here that the cartoons in this book are the products of Clyde E. (Bud) Morris of Akron, Ohio, whose amazing ability to transcribe my teaching ideas in picture form is the making of this entire unique presentation - even the best of pictures needs interpretation and explanation Therefore, I have made a list of suggestions to the reader, which will enable him to benefit fully from the Talking Horn.

Developing a good strong foundation is like building a house on solid rock. it is the most important aspect of mastering a brass instrument. One of the most important skills to pass on to young musicians, is to teach them the importance of technique and fundamentals. After years of teaching private lessons and clinics to young trumpeters, Eddie Jimenez has set out to write three trumpet method books that develop technique and fundamentals without forcing the student to go too high or too fast too soon. These three method books are designed as a precursor to all the great method books advanced players get to enjoy.

Most people consider improvisation to be an essential element of Jazz, and musicians occasionally use the word 'Jazz' as a synonym for improvisation. To improvise is to compose and perform simultaneously. A great deal of improvised music is spontaneous, unrehearsed, not written down beforehand. This particular book will contain exercises that have been written and formalized to determine the degrees of the scales, 1. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will study carefully the subdivision of every scale according to two tetrachords. The first one is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the second is 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will also play arpeggios of all kinds to extend the scale to its maximum degree. This book will explain to the student how to start a phrase of improvisation from any starting point of the scale (major, dominant, minor, diminished, etc.) Any individual or class using this book should listen to as much jazz, recorded and live, as possible. Good luck, and remember, 'JAZZ. IS ALIVE!'.

Given the many demanding disciplines involved in achieving a solid 'sound' on the trumpet, it's easy to understand why most trumpet methods concentrate on breath control/ support, range and endurance- and attention to air/finger coordination is often overlooked. The purpose of these exercises is to challenge and develop greater finger strength, speed and flexibility. For best results, practice these exercises in strict tempo - with a metronome - making sure that you push the valves down firmly. As you master, increase tempo in small increments. Always keep your air stream supported and sing through the entire exercise. Remember, the last note is as important (if not, more) as the first!

If beginning players learn the twelve major scales, twelve jazz melodic minor scales, two whole tone scales and three diminished scales, they will be able to negotiate more than 95% of the chords that will be coming their way. Many corresponding scales that fit chords are simply modes of one the above scales. A major scale gives seven modes that fit seven different chords. Times that by twelve and 84 chords can be covered by simply knowing the twelve major scales. It can sound overwhelming, not to worry, after all music is about what you have to say not how many musical nick-knacks you collect. Jazz players of all eras have looked for new devices to experiment with. Students are no different. Once I have given the foundation of the above scales I let students choose a sound or device that they like. This book is a result of that teaching perspective. It is also a result of me being tired of writing out the same information year after year and serves as a compilation of many jazz improvisation and compositional techniques. Learning them all is not the goal. The book is simply a collection and includes brief explanations and drills to help utilize a new sound into a player's vocabulary. This text can be used individually or in a group of any instrument combination. A good number of the chapters are organized specifically for this.

After the hundreds of books that we have published and distributed over the decades, we had yet to include something devoted to the subject of trumpet mutes, which are such important tools for all trumpeters. Thanks to Louise Baranger, who states, 'The importance of owning good mutes cannot be stressed enough', we have produced this booklet which ought to have a place in any trumpet player's library.
