After graduating from the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp, Guy Cuyvers pursued additional studies at the American University of Washington, D.C. During the 1980s and 90s, Guy wrote many compositions and arrangements for guitar. His first CD Cadence was released in 1996. One year later Pablo’s Friends, a book and CD with some of his guitar compositions, was published. In 1995, his career as a film composer knew a successful start with the release of his first soundtrack. In just a few years, Guy composed and recorded three CD’s with symphonic film music. Guy Cuyvers currently teaches at the music department of the academy in Mortsel, near Antwerp. In 2003, he founded the acoustic band Lunes. Its first album was released in May 2005. This quartet for saxophones, entitled Introduction and Variations on a Popular Rondo by Gabriel Pierné, is a standard in the saxophone quartet repertoire. Composed in 1934 and dedicated to the Marcel Mule Quartet, this piece for advanced players is as bright and cheerful as a round dance should be, and yet, quite delicate and light in terms of writing. With many ornaments and variations, Introduction and Variations begins slowly but is interrupted twice by the rondo. Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) won the Prix de Rome in 1882. The composer wrote many chamber compositions, piano pieces, symphonic music and some oratorios.

As a 20th century composer, Gerard Bunk developed a distinctive musical style comparable perhaps to that of Max Reger or Sigfrid Karg-Elert. In addition to Bunk’s large-scale organ work “Legende” op. 29 and its symphonic version op. 29II, there is a further well-known “Legende” op. 55b written for organ and string orchestra (or string quartet) which was composed in 1945.This edition offers the earlier version of this work, dating from 1914, in its original instrumentation for organ and brass quartet. In order to facilitate performance, the sketchily notated score is carefully supplemented by performance markings from the string version.What Albert Schweitzer praised in the earlier “Legende”, “the calm and vivid layout of the complete work”, is also recognisable in Bunk’s later composition: the catchy, modestly beautiful theme alongside the clear musical form of this “Legende” for organ and brass quartet.

“Tico-Tico” is a well-known Brazilian piece composed by Zequinha de Abreu. Georges Sadeler arranged this work for Saxophone and Clarinet Quartet. Georges Sadeler, born in 1988 is a Luxembourgish composer and saxophonist with the Grand Ducal Military Band of Luxembourg. His father kindled his interest in composing and arranging at an early age, a study he later continued under his two teachers Marco Pütz and Claude Lenners, both of whom taught at the Conservatoire of Music, Luxembourg. He gradually began to establish his own style, combining the enormous range of possibilities of contemporary music and classical music and, in the years that followed, he won six first prizes at various national and international composition competitions. His works have since been performed all over Europe.
