The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067800.

The House of Esterhazy commissioned what are probably some of the most important masses to be written at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century: Joseph Haydn's last, six great masses, Beethoven's Mass in C major and the masses of Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The resonance in the contemporary musical press upon the publication of the B flat major Mass of 1816/17, Hummel's first Esterhazy mass, was exceptionally positive. In addition to the rather simply constructed wind parts, which can also be played by the organ, the work places greater demands on the strings and choir (without soloists) to master an effect-laden, expressive diversity ranging from pastoral simplicity and martial trumpet calls to artistically wrought fugues which is rarely encountered. The present new edition offers the first scholarly-critical edition of the work in a reliable musical text, including performance material. Score available separately - see item CA.4066400.

As well as the Mass in B minor, there are four further, shorter mass compositions by Bach, the so-called Lutheran or Kyrie-Gloria masses. Despite their high musical qualities, they are often overshadowed by other church works by Bach. With their six-movement structure (up to the Cum sancto spiritu) they had their specific liturgical position in church services of the time of Bach. The masses largely comprise parodies, with the original music mainly taken from cantatas which Bach sometimes considerably reworked in his well-known style according to the new context of the work. Ulrich Leisinger has edited the four works for Carus in new critical editions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3123500.
