The overture was written in just five days in December 1851. The starting point for this composition was Schumann's desire to use Goethe's work of the same name as a basis for a singspiel. The Marseillaise that can be heard in the overture alludes to a scene of the epos.

The New Robert Schumann Edition (RSA) is intended as a historico-critical edition of the collected works. They will be carefully studied and prepared according to present-day musicological and editorial techniques and presented in their entirety.
