Full Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1018940 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 13 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078661. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018940). Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.926660 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 112 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588371. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926660). During the late spring of 2017, I began composing a new choral piece based on the 1 Timothy 3:16 text. I was studying Paul's first letter to Timothy at the time when this particular passage jumped out at me. Not only was it an efficient summary of the Gospel message, but it was also a textual grouping, or form, such as might be found in a traditional hymn. What I was reading were indeed lyrics to an actual 1st Century Hymn to Christ, the music of which has since been lost. I entitled my piece, Great is the Mystery. I composed the anthem for SATB (a cappella), and set it to the ESV translation of the scripture. Based on its context, I suspected the song would work great for Ascension Sunday. Our choir sang the piece beautifully, crescendoing at the finish to the words, Believed on in the world and taken up in glory! Later that spring, I played the piece for a dear friend of mine who is Pastor at Immanuel Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. What he told me was actually a bit stunning. He informed me that there were (at least) seven specific known Hymns to Christ written into the New Testament Scriptures, whose text is found among the writings of the apostles’ Paul and John. The 1 Timothy 3:16 verse that I had selected for my piece was indeed one of those texts. At that moment, Pastor Don and I made a pact. If he were to supply me with the literal Greek translations of the other six known Hymns to Christ, I would set out to compose brand new anthems for them all. A new musical collaboration had begun. With this short introduction serving as the genesis of my new song cycle, I offer you these new Seven Anthems to Christ based on the seven known ancient ‘Hymns to Christ' texts found in the New Testament.

Three LatinElegies to Lesbiais a setting of three poems written by the ancient Roman poet, Gaius ValeriusCatullus (84-54 B.C.E.). His muse in these poems is understood to beLesbia, the name believed to have been given by Catullus to his mistress.Lesbia was really Clodia, the sexually promiscuous wife of proconsul QuintusCaecilius Metellus Celer. Clodia was said to have many lovers, and Catullus?torment and obsession for her is well documented in 13 of his poems where thename, Lesbia, is used. His first poem addressed to Lesbia (Catullus 51) is a freetranslation of a poem by the ancient Greek poet, Sappho. Scholars havesuggested that Catullus chose the name, Lesbia, because of his affinity forSappho, who it is believed was a lesbian.
Odie et Amo (Catullus 85), one of the mostcelebrated elegiac couplets composed by Catullus, has inspired many composers withits duality of emotions. The most well-known setting is from Carl Orff?s Catulli Carmina, part of Trionfi, themusical triptych that also includes the Carmina Burana andTrionfo di Afrodite. Unlike Orff?s driving rhythms of outwardlyexpressive anguish, my setting is a more introspective interpretation. It is asif the music is surrendering to the mercurial personalities that Catullus andall humans possess, the tortured ability to hate and love at the same time.
Lesbia mi dicit semper male (Catullus 92) consists of two elegiaccouplets. Catullus? earlier poem, 83,brings some context to 92. In thefirst part of 83, Catullus says:
Lesbia keeps insulting me in front of her husband:
thisfills the fatuous idiot with delight.
Mule, doyou perceive nothing? If she shut up and ignored me
that?dshow healthy indifference;?
In 92, Catullus expounds on the idea of whyLesbia insults him in front of her husband. Catullus reckons that he is alwayscursing her, and he loves her. She always curses him, so she must love him aswell. In his desperation, Catullus uses his wit and humor to reason that hisobsessive love for Lesbia is reciprocated. This setting of 92 uses incessant driving rhythms in the women?s voices to paint thewords, ?Lesbia mi dicit semper male nec tacetumquam de me? (Lesbia always speaks ill of me, never shuts up about me). The repeating rhythmsreturn in the men?s voices when Catullus says he does the same, ?quia sunt totidem mea: deprecor illamassidue? (?it?s the same with me: I?m continually complaining.) The piececomes to a final rest after Catullus realizes the he will always be cursed tolove her.
Mea Lesbia (Catullus 87) also consists of twoelegiac couplets. Catullus was only one of Lesbia?s many lovers, and he oftenwrote of his jealousy and disdain for her unfaithful actions. This elegy waswritten at a time when Lesbia had been particularly cruel toward Catullus.Despite being broken hearted, his obsession with her never waned. In hisdespair and desperation, he basically says, ?My love for you is so great thatno other woman could possibly even know what love is.? This setting of 87 returns to a more introspectivenature where Catullus surrenders his love forever to Lesbia.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1343529 Composed by Byzantine hymn. Arranged by Marilena Zlatanou. Classical. 6 pages. Marilena Zlatanou #929058. Published by Marilena Zlatanou (A0.1343529). BYZANTINE HYMN: O THRINOS TIS ALOSEOS: Lament over the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 (after Simon Karas) arranged for soloist and SATB choirConstantinople (ΚωνταντινοÏπολη=Constantin's City), had been the capital of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) empire from 330 until 1453, when it fell to the Ottomans. It continued then as the capital of the Ottoman empire, and has since 1930 been called Istanbul, the Turkish understanding of the sound of Greek: Stin Poli (= to the City). This Hymn survived in the Greek Orthodox Church and has both a secular and a religious character, as it records the end of the 1100 years glorious era, as well as it is lamenting the religious restrictions the Greek Orthodox Church was subjected to as a result of the Islamic Occupation. The content of the text is the praising of the brave heroes who fought to protect Constantinople, under emperor Constantin, against the invading forces of the Ottomans. duration: 2'25'' Phonetic transcription in the Latin alphabet is notated right below the original Greek text, English translation, and a key to Greek Pronunciation are provided on the title page. The mp3 file provided is exported from the sibelius file. For more information on the arranger, (member of TONO, the Norwegian copyright org.), please visit website www.zlatanou.netAs a Greek living in Norway for most of my adult life, and in my many years’ work as a conductor of a Norwegian choir specializing in Greek music (!), I have experienced the need to enrich the choir’s repertoire with both folk song- as well as other -arrangements of Greek music: This gave me the opportunity to share with our audiences some of the centuries-long musical heritage, as well as helping me make known to them some of the History behind the music of a country of such international historical influence in the past, and such a tourist magnet in our times.

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1323031). GREEK LIFE RONDO String 4tet Based on ancient tunes about Greek life. The lively Food Market song (I'll buy you a rooster) forms the refrain.Paraponiariko moy (Don't be unhappy, little one) is a short melody I found, with a scale I cannot name but very sad.Kariotikos from Ikaria is a slow or accelerating dance with some singing, often seen at weddings, in a flexible mode (partly phrygian).I entered the vineyard (Pour love over me) is related to Solomon's Song. I could only find about 6 bars of this melody: the rest is mine. Aeolian mode.Lullaby: this lovely melody uses the Hitzaz scale, which is common in Greek regions and found in Africa, North America and Spain.Hymn for Matins: this is the oldest Greek Orthodox chant I can find. It is from the 13th C Sticherarion and printed in modern notation in JISOCM Vol 4 (2), p357. Nowadays, chanting there is often a solo, often by a woman, but I believe parallel organum was heard in Greece from the 16th C. Modern services include 4- part hymns. I present all three styles.Song of the Dead Brothers is a complex 9th C Byzantine mourning poem which has since been set to music many times. (The nine brothers died.) I found this phrygian setting from Karystos.

Published by Marilena Zlatanou (A0.887055). GREEK FOLK SONG: THALASAKI MOU (Sea, my dearest) Traditional song from the Aegean Islands arranged for SATB choirIn a country surrounded by an often very stormy sea, and including hundreds of islands, this song is a prayer addressed to it, to spare the lives of loved ones. duration: just under 3' Phonetic transcription in the Latin alphabet is notated right below the original Greek text, English translation, and a key to Greek Pronunciation are provided on the title page. The mp3 file provided is exported from the sibelius file. For more information on the arranger, (member of TONO, the Norwegian copyright org.), please visit website www.zlatanou.net The arrangement attempts to adher to the genuine Greek folk music style as well as allowing some sea waves through it.A piano part is not included but a piano may accompany the choir, dubling the parts, if this is desirable by the conductor. As a Greek living in Norway for most of my adult life, and in my many years’ work as a conductor of a Norwegian choir specializing in Greek music (!), I have experienced the need to enrich the choir’s repertoire with both folk song- as well as other -arrangements of Greek music: This gave me the opportunity to share with our audiences some of the centuries-long musical heritage, as well as helping me make known to them some of the History behind the music of a country of such international historical influence in the past, and such a tourist magnet in our times. By Leonard Cohen. Arranged by Rita Arendz. 20th Century,Folk,Jewish,Pop,Standards. Brass Band. 56 pages. Rita Arendz #949662. Published by Rita Arendz (A0.1365341). DANCE ME TO THE END OF LOVE by Leonard Cohen for Brass BandComposed and released in 1984, Leonard Cohen's Dance Me to the End of Love, on the surface appears to be just another love song. But it also has as its inspiration from the Holocaust. To Cohen, the idea came from hearing, reading, and knowing about the death camps: that at some camps, beside the crematoriums, a string quartet was pressed into performing while the horrors were occurring - and that the players could be next. The lyrics, Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin, represent the beauty of the consummation of life, the end of existence - layered with the surrender we feel for our beloved. The song's structure is similar to a Greek Hasapiko Dance, a style he would have heard while on the Island of Hydra.Although the theme is dark, there is a glimmer of light as Cohen searched from the raw truth to beauty, something he tried to find in all things. This arrangement is for a British-style Brass Band featuring the Flugelhorn and the Solo Tenor Horn. These parts, along with the euphonium part, are for more advanced players.  The accompaniment parts are suitable for intermediate.A moving addition to your repertoire and a wonderful companion to Cohen's Hallelujah!Duration 4:15  56 pagesSound clip generated with NoteperformerMore Arrangements by Rita Arendz: https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/Search.aspx?query=rita%20arendzhttps://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/explore?q=rita+arendz&lang=default.

Cello Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1018958 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 2 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078715. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018958).

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1343535 Composed by Romanos o Melodos. Arranged by Marilena Zlatanou. Classical. 8 pages. Marilena Zlatanou #929063. Published by Marilena Zlatanou (A0.1343535). BYZANTINE HYMN: TI IPERMAHO (To the defender army leader) arranged for SATB choir and pianoDuring a siege of Constantinople in the 6th cent., and while the regular army was engaged in fighting elsewhere, the city was attacked by Avars. The women, children and seniors left there fought as best they could, but finally realized that they had to give up. As a last resort, they carried the icon of Panayia (St. Mary, always referred to as all-holy in Greek), alongside the city walls, something that produced an unexpected effect: The besiegers left! For three days the citizens participated in liturgies addressed to Her, in a hymn called AKATHISTOS YMNOS (=Non-sitting Hymn), where this tropation is central, as it is most actively still used in the Greek Orthodox Church at many other relevant services. The first part is the original, in unison, or sung by a soloist. The piano part and the following choir arrangement are my contribution.duration: 3'33'' Phonetic transcription in the Latin alphabet is notated right below the original Greek text, English translation, and a key to Greek Pronunciation are provided on the title page.

Bassoon Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1018948 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 2 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078681. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018948).
