Jorg Widmann, an internationally sought-after soloist and professor of clarinet at the Freiburg Musikhochschule, displays the exquisite refinement of contemporary clarinet sound in 'Funf Bruchstucke' (already published) for clarinet and piano (KLB 54) and in the present 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet. While noise, as a means of expression, is given much attention in 'Funf Bruchstucke', 'Fantasie' is largely based on the usual Romantic melodious sound, though this time with ironic side trips into dance, klezmer and jazz music, the clarinet's equivalent of light music.
'Fantasie' for solo clarinet is my first real piece for my own instrument, the clarinet. With its eccentric virtuosity and its cheerful, ironic fundamental character, it reflects the experience with Stravinsky's 3 Pieces for solo clarinet of 1919 and the tonal innovations which did not appear in music before Carl Maria von Weber's notation for the clarinet, and takes them further in a new way. It is a little imaginary scene uniting the dialogues of different people in close proximity in the spirit of the commedia dell'arte.

His starting points primarily are specific fast types of movement in the Beethoven works which he translates into his tonal language. Widmann has chosen the same instrumentation as the Beethoven symphonies and takes on the task of causing a similar ‘stir and rhythmic pressure’ (Widmann) with these economical means.

In the preface of the edition, Widmann hints at its 'unsettling reduction and succinct brevity': 'Latently menacing structures of melancholy beauty emerge from almost nothing here. I wish to listen to this tone of the later Brahms in my own Intermezzi which are naturally (and with regard to their age) totally different. And thus pay tribute to Brahms, the love of my youth, who was then overshadowed by Schumann for a long time but is now flaring up anew. The secret after the sound, even the anticipating pre-sound, the space of the in-between is what, to me, constitutes the essence of music. Therefore: Intermezzi.'.

The subtle theme seems to be the saga of Teiresias, the blind prophet, from Greek mythology. According to Widmann himself, he imagined a sound for the unusual instrumentation of six double-basses that 'is both blind and seeing' in its enigmatic whispering.

The piece does not directly reflect Joseph Haydn's Seven Last Words but I would not have been able to write it without knowing that work. The movements in Haydn's quartets (except the final earthquake) are slow movements of shocking forcefulness. What makes the work even more unsettling for me is the relaxed and cheerful acceptance of death (the 'smile' of the A major pizzicato thirds!). When I made myself familiar with the subject matter of crucifixion I discovered that terms like 'walking' and 'the last walk' were most important to me. My piece starts at the final stage of this experience. It contains a number of lost sounds, phrases of futility which come from nowhere and lead to nowhere. The horrifying rubbing and sanding of skin and wood become the 'theme’ of the piece which is combined with tonal, choral-like melodies. I am interested in how to make noises no longer symbolize desolation and tonal phrases no longer represent confidence. - Jörg Widmann.

Die damals sehr angesagten „Techno-Nights inspirierten mich zu diesem Stück. Ein rhythmischer Drive und ein permanenter Wechsel des Pulses jagen in Höchstgeschwindigkeit (180 Schläge pro Minute) vorüber. Die Struktur verdichtet sich zu einer Studie über einen Akkord, der im Prinzip das gesamte Stück hindurch variiert, aber in seinem Tonmaterial unverändert bleibt. Bis sich schließlich das Stück verdichtet zu einem sechs-stimmigen Kanon, der von der ersten Violine bis zum dritten Violoncello wandert und dabei zwischen Dur- und Moll-Terz pendelt. With the title of this composition, Fever Fantasy, Jörg Widmann refers to its musical air: ‘I often feel Robert Schumann‘s melodic shape to be like the amplitude of a temperature curve: nervous, flickering, feverish, an infinite number of small and large wave crests and troughs within the principal line.’ The composer approaches this sound phenomenon with a setting for acoustic instruments. Nevertheless, he succeeds in conjuring up very unusual sound spectrums. Over long sections, the notation of this score mirrors the musical progressions, containing no concrete pitches but detailed performance instructions instead. Slowly, individual tones emerge from ascending pizzicato lines, colourless sound surfaces, sounds of harmonics roughened by tremolos, and virtuoso clarinet scales, tones that do not reveal their origin until the work ends: C - F - E - D sharp, the beginning of Schumann’s first violin sonata.

German.Es war 1996, als mir Christoph Poppen, der damalige Leiter des Münchener Kammerorchesters, von einem kuriosen Konzert in Münsing (Ammerland) erzählte: während eines seiner Konzerte mit dem Orchester in der dortigen Kirche gab es, für alle hör- und sichtbar, eines der größten Unwetter, das die Region je gesehen hatte. Dabei schlug der Blitz ein in eine Art Wahrzeichen des Ortes, eine mehrere Jahrhunderte alte Linde. Unter den Zuhörern damals: die dort lebende Dichterin und Schriftstellerin Diana Kempff. Sie war unmittelbar erschüttert vom Tod der Linde und schrieb unter diesem Eindruck einige Gedichte. Christoph Poppen wiederum war – wie in vielen anderen Zusammenhängen auch – genialer Vermittler und stellte alsbald den Kontakt zu mir her. Die Idee: am Ort des Geschehens, in der Münsinger Kirche, solle ein Jahr später die Uraufführung einer Art Requiem für diesen Baum, der so vieles „gesehen“ hatte, erklingen. Im Rahmen der Holzhauser Musiktagen mit den Texten von Diana Kempff und meiner (noch zu schreibenden) Musik. Es gab bald eine wunderbare, sehr intensive Begegnung von Diana Kempff und mir, bei der sie etwas für Schriftsteller nicht gerade Typisches tat: sie stellte mir frei, aus den vorliegenden Gedichten nach Belieben lediglich Teile, sogar nur Zeilenfragmente zu verwenden und auch die Reihenfolge nach meinen Bedürfnissen anzuordnen und zu gestalten. Sie begriff sofort (und wünschte!), dass durch die Musik ohnehin etwas Drittes, etwas ganz Anderes entstehen würde. Die Tatsache, dass wir Monate später eine sichtlich bewegte Diana Kempff auf die Bühne holen durfte, freute uns alle besonders. Ihre Lyrik ist Ausdruck einer offenkundig zutiefst gequälten Seele und kommt uns oft wunderlich-versponnen entgegen. Einer zerbrechlichen Zartheit steht eine bisweilen fast brutale Härte unversöhnlich gegenüber. Das Schubert’sche „Fremd bin ich eingezogen“ gilt für sie in besonderer Weise und äußert sich in ihren Versen in einer Nähe zu allem Fremden (trotz des gleichzeitigen manischen Umkreisens des Eigenen und der eigenen Erinnerung), Abseitigen und auch (bei aller gleichzeitigen Skepsis) Übernatürlichen. Dieses geisterhaft-spukige Element versuchte ich durch meine Textauswahl und mit musikalischen Mitteln in diesen nun „Sieben Abgesängen“ zu verdeutlichen. Das erste Stück ist eine karge Studie über das Verrinnen der Zeit, das Nichts; das Zweite beschwört den Regen (den heilbringenden) herbei, der dann später – wenngleich mit entsetzlicher Wirkung – auch kommt. Den dritten Abgesang habe ich „Tanz der toten Seelen“ betitelt; es ist ein Zwiefacher, der jedoch durch seine düster-halbseidene „Wiener“ Chromatik alles Liebenswürdig-Oberbayerische längst verloren hat. Das klanglich vielleicht avancierteste und dichteste Stück ist der vierte Abgesang, der ganz aus der Perspektive der Linde selbst erzählt wird. Der fünfte Abgesang zu den Worten „Und wenn der Tod so kommen mag“ ist im Stile einer traurigen Volksweise bewusst schlicht gehalten. Während der sechste Satz in seinem expressionistischen Gestus nicht ungefährlich das Monodram streift, ist es schließlich die Seele (die ausgehauchte, die weiterexistierende?), die wörtlich den letzten Abgesang über die Bäume und die Seelen prägt. Between 'jazzy-secco' and the 'Spieluhr' solo, the piano announces the passage of time: '12 Glockenschläge Mitternacht'.

This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the “junior†companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto’s large-dimensional introductory section with the indication “Feierlich, schreitend†[solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one’s way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward.As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic – i.e. vertical – progressions.- Jörg Widmann.
