Lionel Tertis a donné la première représentation de sa transcription de l'Irlande Sonate pour violon n o 2 en 1918, avec le compositeur au piano, et il est resté l'un des piliers de ses programmes de récital pour le reste de sa carrière. John Ireland’s terrific version of the Missa Brevis St. Stephen’s Mass for unaccompanied mixed voices is deceptively simple with a plainer setting than his other compositions. Probably started in 1932 there is no record of this piece and in fact it was an unfinished work. It has been effectively and authentically completed and edited by Geoffrey Bush.

A delightful collection of Five Sixteenth Century Poems set to music for Voice and Piano by John Ireland. These songs vary from the lively and spirited to the lilting and elegiac and serve as a wonderfully unique collection of pieces for a recital.

Composer John Ireland had a particular love for the Sussex Downs where he lived much of his life in a converted windmill. The Downland Suite reflects his appreciation of that landscape and is among the most loved of his manyworks. Originally composed for Brass Band in four movements the two favourite elements of the Downland Suite are here extracted and arranged for Piano. The Elegy and Menuet has also been arranged for String Orchestra and isplayed frequently. The Elegy is reminiscent of Elgar and has an ineffable Englishness about it. The Menuet has been described as ‘bucolic’. Both are within the reach of intermediate pianists in this arrangement.

Bush who died in 1995 and lived well into his nineties was a pupil of John Ireland. Meditation is based on an old English ballad. '...not the easiest of pieces; well worth getting to grips with though.' The Strad. Duration c.10'. Op. 93 Nos. 1 & 2.Grade: 8
