Pour Choeur Mixte A Cappella-In 1936 attempting to overcome his reputation for musical flippancy Poulenc began studying the motets of Montverdi with Nadia Boulanger. Around the same time his close friend and contemporary Pierre Octave Ferroud had died. Amidst this personal crisis Poulenc was led back to the Catholicism of his youth and this confluence of spiritual and musical interests led him to compose the Messe en Sol Majeur (Mass in G). Motet Pour Les Fêtes Solennelles-In 1936 Poulenc began creating the more sombre austere tones of religion after returning to his Catholic faith including Exultate Deo a motet for SATB a cappella.Poulenc’s setting of the Psalm 81 Exultate Deo ‘Sing aloud unto the Lord’ is both reverent and vivid and his harmonic tricks are used to dramatic ends.
