Unusually for him, Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto, initiated by the strings, and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to that of a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song, around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance, with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina, poetry and athleticism for the bassoon, set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, horns). Bassoon part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Carl Maria von Weber wrote the present concerto in 1811 for the Munich bassoon player Georg Friedrich Brandt. The date of the world premiere is not known; what is ascertained, however, is a performance in Prague on 19 February 1813 by Brandt, to whom the work was dedicated.Along with Mozarts B-flat major Concerto K. 191 (186e), Webers bassoon concerto is one of the most popular and frequently played concertos for this low woodwind instrument. Weber illustrates the instruments qualities by using a different form in each movement, as we can see in its primary themes: the opening movement is dominated by a rhythmically striking theme; cantabile passages set the tone for the more lightly scored Adagio; and in the closing Rondo. Allegro, the soloist can demonstrate his virtuosity from the very beginning through large intervallic leaps and rapid runs.Along with Mozart's B-flat major Concerto K. 191 (186e), Weber's bassoon concerto is one of the most popular and frequently played concertos for this low woodwind instrument.

“André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto for Bassoon was composed in 1954, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments, and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in his Concerto for Bassoon. The piece requires high, virtuosic skills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced bassoonists, Jolivet provides an exciting, alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.”.

This arrangement came about thanks to a bright, high school bass clarinet student from Washington State, expressing his desire to play a concerto of some sort. Though the repertoire for the instrument has been quickly expanding in recent decades, the arranger thought what might suit him perfectly would be just to simply transcribe this Rondo movement of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto. Written when Mozart was only 18 years old, this concerto is a cornerstone in the repertoire, and bassoonists are typically expected to play at least part of it in any orchestral audition. The solo part suits the range of the bass clarinet very well and an extended range instrument is not required.
