Clever arrangements for two guitars of Bartók's 'For Children' piano pieces that will enhance the literature for guitar tuition. Béla Bartók's 'For Children' is one of the best known pedagogical works for piano teachers of the twentieth century, second only perhaps to the same composer's 'Mikrokosmos'. It was based firmly on the huge number of folk songs he collected, recorded and studied with his colleague Zoltán Kodály. At the time, Bartók was offering something very new to piano teachers and their students. Siegfried Steinkogler became acquainted with 'For Children' at the beginning of his guitar studies and, from them, learnt a great deal about melody and harmonisation. He has chosen 38 of the original 79 pieces to offer in arrangements for the guitar. They are presented with helpful fingerings, technical solutions and aids to familiarize the younger students with common notations. For beginners, ten of the pieces are played exclusively in the first position before a gently increasing level of difficulty helps the player broaden their skills. Barto k, a self-made expert in regional folk music, had composed For Children for piano and it became a seminal publication in piano pedagogy. Arranger Siegfried Steinkogler was exposed to a guitar transcription early in his own studies, but thought that its inherent difficulty removed it from its intended use as repertoire for young students. His arrangement for two guitars addresses that issue, and makes For Children once again accessible to young players.

This cycle, containing 20 studies for solo guitar is inspired from Bela Bartokâs didactical works, such as For Children or Mikrokosmos. The common element found in his works and mine are the themes coming from the children folk music which are very rich in Hungary and moreover in Romania. All the developed songs I used in this volume are a little part of the ritualic music of the Romanian children. These little studies are polyphonic and harmonic exercises which are very useful for the young guitarists. The modal structures give to this score a unique flavor and invite the musicians to discover an astonishing music tradition.

Musi c For a While is a collection of three short sketches. The music interweaves elements of East European folklore, North American minimalism, European polyphony and traditional Italian music. The first sketch is a very rhythmical, lively and powerful dance based on a fragment from Bela Bartok’s collection For Children. The second sketch is like a canon, a tribute to Pachelbel, but interestingly the development of the piece is influenced by contemporary minimalism. The music, based on a cell of 4 bars with a typical tonal progression that is constantly variated, is simple, beautiful and bright. The last sketch is an homage to Federico Fellini’s universe. With a typical Italian dance rhythm (including references to Nino Rota’s music), this piece evokes the crazy, funny and melancholic wMusic For a While est une collection de trois courts croquis.
