We†™re delighted to distribute this book of duets for piano and organ! Included are eleven pieces drawn mainly from the organ chorale preludes of J. S. Bach. The book also contains concerto movements by J. S. Bach, C. P. E. Bach, and Antonio Vivaldi. While envisioned for piano and organ, these arrangements by Noel Jones can also be played on organ and harpsichord or two pianos. For those congregations that are used to encountering piano and organ duets, these pieces are a welcome expansion of the literature for that pairing of instruments. These pieces are most suitable for preludes and postludes and will also have a home in your church’s recital series. A listing of suggested organ registration is included in an appendix.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. However, his prominence within the organ repertoire remains absolute with sublime works, including his Variations on a Noel. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for piano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré's Op. 20, the Variations on a Noel for organ was composed in 1922. It is based on an old Noel (Pastorale) in D minor. The variations displays contrast through tonality, rhythm, timbre and harmony, among other aspects. Dupré's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Variations on a Noel is no exception.

In his own distinctive style, Robert van Beringen has composed a very unique fantasy on three themes by the famous Baroque composers Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friedrich Händel. Van Beringen used Bach’s chorale Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht (‘Break forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light’) from his Christmas Oratorio and the recitative Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with Us from Händel’s Messiah. A perfect way to say Merry Christmas in music!
