Steven was born in Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. He started learning the piano since the age of 11. He learned from a few teachers including, Elly Yap, Yoyo Tjong, May Lim, Dee Yinn Leong, Sam Fee Khoon, Loo Bang Hean and Chuan Wu. In addition to that he had learned basic composition techniques from Leong Dee Yinn and learned briefly from a Malaysian composer, Adeline Wong.
He is now studying at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, part of the University of Adelaide, doing composition and music technology. He is studying with Stephen Whittington.
