AlÂthough he called music his ?avoÂcaÂtion,? he proÂduced over 2,000 hymn tunes in his lifeÂtime. HowÂever, his main trade was secÂuÂlar: He was presÂiÂdent of the J. A. Fay woodÂworkÂing maÂchinÂery comÂpaÂny, and an exÂtremeÂly sucÂcessÂful busÂiÂnessÂman. He alÂso served as SunÂday School supÂerÂinÂtendÂent and choir diÂrectÂor at the Mount AuÂburn BapÂtist Church in CinÂcinÂnaÂti, Ohio, and beÂqueathed large sums to varÂiÂous causÂes.
