It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The opera's libretto is based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais La folle journée ou le Mariage de Figaro ('The Mad Day or The Marriage of Figaro') which was first performed in 1784. It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married foiling the efforts of their philandering employer Count Almaviva to seduce Susanna and teaching hima lesson in fidelity.

On the occasion of the marriage of her son Archduke Ferdinand of Austria to the Princess Maria Ricciarda Beatrice of Modena the Empress Maria Theresia commissioned the young Mozart to compose the work Serenata Teatrale “Ascanio in Alba”. The librettist the Viennese Abate Guiseppe Parini one of the most outstanding poets of the 18th century wrote a baroque-designed libretto which paid homage to and congratulated the royal couple.Mozart wrote the music in only a few weeks from the end of August until 23 September 1771. The first performance took place on 17 October 1771 in Milan to rousing success. Italian/English-Mozart's 'The Marriage Of Figaro' was based on Beaumarchais' politically radical play - the second of the trilogy which begun with 'The Barber Of Seville' - later of course adapted into an opera by Rossini. As in 'Il Barbiere diSiviglia' 'The Marriage of Figaro' depicted the aristocracy as buffoons controlled and outwitted by their cunning servants. This time Figaro and Susanna are due to wed but must first outwit the Count who is determined toexercise a master's ancient right to deflower the bride of his servant. This is the Schirmer edition of the libretto in the original Italian with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

In his fascinating preface to Bärenreiter’s facsimile Professor Colin Lawson Director of the Royal College of Music describes the journey made by Mozart’s autograph following its sale in 1800 by Constanze Mozart’s widow to its eventual resting place in London SW7 where it is the jewel in the RCM’s extensive collection of historic manuscripts. The Piano Concerto in C minor K.491 is oneof Mozart’s greatest Piano Concertos not least because of the dramatic character of its minor key (it is one of only two Piano concertos composed in minor keys). It also has the largest Orchestra he ever used in a Piano concerto and the only Piano concerto to use both Oboes and Clarinets. Written in 1786 during a period of almost feverish activity it was completed only 22 days after the A major concerto K.488 and during composition of The Marriage of Figaro. The autograph is exceptional in that Mozart records sketches that he later enlarged and extensively revised for the score thus allowing us an insight into his creative process. Mozart’s work appears here for the first time in a colour facsimile making it possible to easily recognise the contrasting colours of ink. The renowned Mozart scholar and pianist Robert Levin has written an illuminating commentary. He explains Mozart’s method of composition and guides the reader page by page through the autograph. Evelyn Rothwell (1911-2008) was a British musician who was considered one of the best oboists of her generation. She arranged Two Songs by Mozart for Oboe and Piano in 1969.Das Lied DerTrennung (?Song of Separation? K. 519) was written in 1787 for Male Voice and Piano setting a text by Klamer Eberhard Karl Schmidt. Set in a minor key it explores the feelings of angst and pain created as two lovers areseparated. Un Moto Di Gioia Mi Sento (?I feel a surge of Joy? K. 579) by contrast is a much happier piece. It was written in 1789 when Mozart was revising his famous opera?The Marriage of Figaro and was originally written as a Soprano Aria.
