“Born in Toulouse, Marcel Bitsch (1921-2011) went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming a professor of counterpoint at the institution. As an exceptionally versatile composer, Bitsch has composed orchestral works, chamber works and numerous pieces and studies for wind instruments. Four Variations on a Theme by Domenico Scarlatti is a significant addition to the Trumpet and Cornet repertoire. Suited to advanced level trumpeters and cornetists, Bitsch's Four Variations on a Theme by Domenico Scarlatti includes a variety of technical aspects as well as sublime musicality. In his latter years, Bitsch dedicated himself to the analysis of music by the Baroque masters. It is clear that his inspiration for Four Variations on a Theme by Domenico Scarlatti comes from his passion for and interest in the era. The variety of this exciting Bitsch piece is outstanding, creating a necessary, inspiring addition to the Trumpet and Cornet repertoire.”.

This Drones, Variations, Ornaments sheet music is the full score for this innovative and dramatic piece by Nico Muhly . According to Muhly , this piece is music in constant transformation, featuring steadily evolving melodies from a number of instruments, punctuated with hugely original percussive parts, with instructions to fill the Cymbal with chain, coins and other metal objects in order to make it sound like glass shattering. It is this inspired composition that makes Drones, Variations, Ornaments the interesting and acclaimed piece that it is. With this piece, Muhly has attempted to recreate the sound and motion of a machine through music. String chords begin the piecewith a light and soothing opening, before the machine (made up of Winds, Guitar, Percussion and Piano) awakens. This truly unusual piece is a joy to listen to and perform, and we are pleased to offer this full score to you.

“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.”.

MusicWorks – Grade 4 First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomizes his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best. The poignant lament “Mo Chile Mear” (My Gallant Hero) was authored after the defeat of the Scots and their Celtic allies at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, ending dreams of independence from English rule. Michael's emotional setting opens with a flute solo then builds gradually as layers of instrumental groups are added. The piece shifts to a lilting 6/8 style, propelled by the percussion section, and culminates in a majestic statement by the entire ensemble.

The third and final volume of keyboard music from the reclusive Carl Fasch contains his four sets of extended keyboard variations, including some impressive displays of virtuosity, and a variety of short keyboard works, the majority of them previously unpublished. This volume completes the survey of his Complete Keyboard Works, which justify contemporary opinion that he was the true successor to C. P. E. Bach, and for the first time provides the modern player with remarkable new repertoire for performance on the clavichord, harpsichord, or fortepiano.
