First performance 19 May 1998 Merkin Concert Hall New York City.Quoting Weir: 'In my previous work I have often enjoyed inventing titles whichattempt to encapsulate the particular world of each composition but this fifteen minutes piece for violin cello and piano is simply entitled Piano Trio . What is the reason for this unusually abstract description? I thinkperhaps that in this piece the many external impressions which habitually make up my musical world have become too numerous and too personal to be pinned down in the space of few words that a composition title allows.The firstmovement began in my mind with impressions of Venice as relayed in Schubert's song Gondelfahrer; the crisp midnight air the dark choppy water the bells tolling the gondolier alone in emotional turmoil. Schubert's world is aplace where I can find constant inspiration and strength.The second movement recalls a time when I was called from a phone box in Africa. At one moment I was alone in my room the next (or so it seemed in my imagination)surrounded by light heat and sudden energy and activity. The movement is not however an evocation of African music; it takes the form of a scherzo and trio which collide with each other at the movement's conclusion.Thethird movement formed in my mind whilst I was reading some Gaelic poetry from the Hebridean island of Lewis on Scotland 's far flung Atlantic fringe. I was thinking of the bleached white beaches in that part of the world whereevery object lying on the sand - a washed-up bottle or a bird's skeleton - is a major event in a deserted landscape. The same might be said of this short set of musical variations where melodic fragments are laid out with plentyof space around them clear and plain for everyone to hear.

Brahms?s famous Horn Trio op.40 composed in 1865 for the natural horn is a work of considerable significance within the composer?s output. Up until now the work was believed to have a strong emotional connection to the death of his mother three months earlier.However Christopher Hogwood draws on a newly discovered source for this Bärenreiter publication a source that has not been available for any previous edition. We now learn that Brahms wrote at least the trio movement some twelve years earlier in 1853 and that it was originally intended for solo piano. This piano movement is printed in the appendix.This Urtext edition offers notonly the standard instrumentation of violin horn and piano but also the alternative scoring for violoncello or viola instead of horn. The variants found in the violoncello and viola parts are shown as ossias in the score.The introduction (Eng/Ger) describes the compositional process includes information on the performance and publication history of the work and offers comments on performance practice. A critical commentary with facsimile pages of the manuscript rounds off this pioneering edition.Appendix with the 1853 piano version of the trio movementIncludes alternative parts for violoncello and viola

Par SIBELIUS JEAN. Five multi-movement trios for piano and two string instruments by Sibelius are known from the years 1883?1888. The ?large? trios, such as the Havträsk and Korpo Trio (JS 207, JS 209), were written for the classical piano trio scoring of violin, violoncello and piano. Apparently, Sibelius kept composing trios to play among his family and friends, having in mind to be one of the musicians himself. Chamber music was an essential part of social life. When listening to Sibelius? trios, one cannot help but notice that the repertoire included many works of Viennese Classicism. Although Sibelius's feelings towards his youthful works were not exactly uncomplicated, Sibelius biographer Otto Andersson later reported ?that the master, in later years, missed [the Korpo Trio] very much and would have been very pleased to see [it] preserved.? / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / Violon, Violoncelle et Piano

Klaviertrio-As with all of his mature chamber music works Ravel also emerges as an innovator of traditional forms and techniques in his piano trio composed in 1914. Thus the ?Passacaglia? movement corresponds to the underlying form of theBaroque Period. The music on the other hand was according to Ravel ?like that of Saint-Saëns? which was surely meant ironically. For the historicizing template only served as a framework for experiments with musical idiom: froma constant oscillation between major and minor to combinations and overlaying of the most diverse metres. The fingering for our edition of this technically extremely demanding work was provided by the renowned French pianistPascal Rogé.

This diptych consists of two brief contrasting movements which however have a common focus on the amalgamation and fusion of tonal colour in the three instruments.The harmonic foundations of the first movement are provided by ring modulation spectrums although these are also based on equal-tempered tuning in semitones. In the manner of a deep intake of breath, life is breathed into the first movement through numerous clashes, contrasting registers and runs at lightning speed.The second movement has an unmistakable focus on tonal colouring and the concept of echo and reverberation complemented by simple acoustic effects, unfolding a substantially extended tonal spectrum in continuation of the first movement. / Flûte, Violoncelle Et Piano
