The last decades we humans have witnessed a significant number of disturbing developments. If we look at the direct and persistent destructive influence of humans on nature: air and water quality are reducing, soils are depleting, crops are short of pollinators, coasts are less protected from storms, deforestation, the degradation of land, loss of biodiversity and pollution. In stark contrast we find the intelligence and boundless creativity of humans: what about all the high technological advancements? What lies ahead in the realm of Artificial Intelligence? Will we let machines make human decisions? What ethical issues arise there? This composition reflects the desperation and urgency of the human need for action. The music draws inspiration from the brutal natural forces that ravage our world as a direct consequence of human failure and selfishness. Are we heading towards a 'Judgment Day'? Or will humanity find a way to reverse negative trends towards a more livable, peaceful, and joyful environment for humans, animals, and nature? To underscore this message, composer Peter Knockaert opted for a highly classical idiom that has been used by many composers in classical music: the 'Dies Irae'. Traditionally, the Dies Irae is the third part of a requiem (funeral mass). The text used in 'Judgment Day? (for optional choir) is coming from the original Latin text.

'Twilight of the Gods', the Third Day, brings Wagner's Ring cycle with an evening and three days, all full-length performances lasting for hours, to an end. Everything that has happened in the parts before is now brought to a close. Brunhilde and Siegfried burn to death together 'in a purifying fire'; they are redeemed in the highest union. A whole epoch is inevitably nearing its end: The world of men and the realm of the gods are hopelessly corrupt, only a new beginning after the total breakdown can lead to a whole new world.Apart from the libretto, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A short synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction.

Noted composer M. Roger Holland has taken antiphons from the 2010 Roman Missal and paired them with psalm verses, creating compositions that have wide use in the liturgy. Some parishes will want to use these pieces on the appointed day for entrance or communion processionals. Others may find use for them throughout the entire year, perhaps using them as a weekly song through the season. The songs work well as stand-alone processional pieces and many choirs will want to use them as choir anthems or congregational songs during the preparation of the gifts and altar. While utilizing official texts of the Roman rite, they can be used by congregations of any denomination. Roger explores the wide breadth that is African American music, you’ll find lyric ballades, spiritualinspired offerings, gospel-style songs, and pieces with a more uptempo feel. This is the third volume in this series. Contains: When He Calls on Me • Not by Bread Alone • Hide Not Your Face • Hosanna • The Lord Is Truly Risen, Alleluia For cantor or soloist.

Larry Clark does it again with this tuneful new feel good piece. You and your students will walk away humming this tune. There is even a nice contrasting lyrical middle section in the relative minor to break up the piece.Solstice: one of two times in the year when the sun is at its greatest distancefrom the celestial equator.A solstice happens at the mid-point of summer, about June 21, and the midpoint of winter, about December 22. Each of those times of year is delightful. The carefree days of summer have just begun around June 21, when the mind wanders to long bike rides or walks on the beach. During the winter solstice the mind is filled with all of the delights that the holiday season has to offer. Either way, a solstice is a joyous and fun filled time of year, and this piece is intended to bring to mind some of these wonderful times. The main theme should be performed in a light carefree manner, which is then contrasted by the more lyrical and passionate middle section. As with all of my pieces for younger students, the tempo indicated is merely a guide. Adjust the tempo to fit the needs of your students. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.

In his libretto for “ Riccardo primo”, Paolo Rolli drew on Antonio Lotti’s opera “ Isacio tiranno ” which had been performed in Venice in 1710. Handel needed a text with two great women’s roles, for the two best female singers of the day were members of his troupe – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni . He had already written the operas “Alessandro” and “ Admeto ” for them. He began composing “ Riccardo ” in spring 1727, completing the first version on 16 May. However, following the death of King George I on 11 June 1727, the theatres remained closed. For Handel, who had become a British citizen in February 1727, the accession of George II to the throne offered new possibilities, and he embarked on a revision of the opera. With this, he was able to offer a new opera for the coronation festivities, the hero of which was one of King George’s charismatic forebears. From May onwards, Handel thoroughly revised the present score, wrote some parts anew and expanded it with particularly splendid music. Handel and Rolli also improved the plot and introduced patriotic elements to honour the British monarchy. The historic background is the third crusade against Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria , who had recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Although King Richard I captured Cyprus and together with French crusaders stormed the fortress of Akko in the Holy Land, the crusade ended with a ceasefire and Jerusalem remained in Saladin’s hands. Richard was given the title ‘Coeur-de-lion‹’ by the English for his great military ability and bravery, although the Sicilians had first given him this name because of his relentless cruelty in clashes around Messina . The vocal score is based on the Halle Handel Edition volume published in 2005, edited by Terence Best, and contains the second version of the opera which was premiered in November 1727.

Johann Matthias Sperger, no doubt the leading double bass player of his time, was born on 23 March 1750 in the Lower Austrian town of Feldsberg (today Valtice, Czech Republic). After studying in Vienna and occupying various posts in Pressburg and Eberau, he was hired by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin for the Duke's court ensemble in Ludwigslust. There Sperger died on 13 May 1812, a highly esteemed man. His extensive compositional oeuvre (which includes 45 symphonies, chamher works, church music and concertos) found its climax in his works for double bass solo. His 18 concertos, sonatas and chamber works for various instrumental comhinations off er the soloist gratifying musical tasks both from a musical as well as a technical point of view. The Adagio for Double Bass and String Quartet was composed around 1796/97, no doubt for the composer's own use. The autograph belongs to the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (class. no. Mus. 5179). The work is based on thematic material from the second movement of Anton Franz Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 3. The relationship between the two works and the mutual influence of both composers is plainly visible. In order to allow a performance of this charming little work without a string quartet, we are also offering a version with piano accompaniment (DVfM 8109) as well. Since the original solo part was written for a double bass tuned in thirds and a fourth (Viennese tuning: A-D-F sharp-A), it was necessary to arrange the enclosed for the solo tuning customary today: F sharp-B-E-A. The editor and publisher wish to thank the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for its permission to print this first edition. Klaus Trumpf, Munich, Spring 1997 Klaus TrumpfSperger, musician at the Mecklenburg court in Ludwigslust, achieved fame above all with his works for double bass. Thematically, the A major Adagio closely recalls Anton Franz Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 3.
