Piano solo part for Paganini Variations - Piano Concerto No.3 by Poul Ruders (2014). Score available: WH32201 Programme note: In 1999 my friend, American guitar virtuoso David Starobin, wanted me to write a concerto for guitar and orchestra. It quickly dawned on me, that this commission presented a golden opportunity to contribute to the time-honoured tradition of composing a series of variations on Nicolo Paganini's famous 24th Caprice for violin solo, a work which itself is a set of variations. The 16 bar (with the first 4 bars repeated) theme is not particularly sophisticated or intricate, but its inherent simplicity and logic just grow on you, almost to the point ofdistraction - and the secret behind it being hauled through the wringer by composers as disparate as Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski is perhaps found in its - what I'll call, with a quick nervous look over my shoulder: brilliant banality. You can do anything with that tune, it'll always be recognizable and just there, however much you maul it. The piece (subtitled Guitar Concerto no 2) was written pretty quickly, premiered and subsequently recorded for Bridge Records with David and the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Wagner, and everybody was happy. But the story didn't end there, and it must be the ultimate proof of the durability of the theme, not to mention the flexibility and far-sightedness of David Starobin , when he 14 years later suggested why not transcribe the solo part for piano?. The idea appealed to me immediately. One thing was clear from the beginning: the new version could in no way sound like a transcription. My aim was to end up with a solo-part sounding like were it the one-and-only, the real thing, if you like. The orchestral score remains exactly the same in both cases. Both versions, the two Paganini Variations, are comparable to a set of twins, not quite identical, but almost. And both each others's equal. Poul Ruders.

The main part of Supplement Volume 12 features the predecessor of the Grandes Études de Paganini, a series of six études written after Paganini between 1838 and 1840, and referred to by Liszt as transcendent performance (Études d'exécution transcendante d'apres Paganini). The series was inspired not only by the virtuoso violinist and composer's Caprices and Violin Concerto in B minor but also by Schumann's Paganini Études, which Liszt presumably encountered thanks to Clara Wieck at the beginning of 1838. The volume also includes the first and second solo piano versions of Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (1840 and 1841), which Liszt composed a number of times in several versions,as well as two Wagner transcriptions and the first versions of adaptations of two works by Russian composers. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously with the Complete Edition volume in cloth-bound, its paperback for practical purposes is also published, the contents of which, except for the critical notes, is identical with the Complete Edition volume. The GRANDES ETUDES D´APRES PAGANINI are a series of six études for the piano written by Liszt. The pieces are based on the compositions of Niccolò Paganini for violin. Other pieces based on various other composers are also included in the volume. Adetailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Hungarian Rhapsody N° 2 is the second in a set of 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies by composer Franz Liszt, and is by far the most famous of the set. Few other piano solos have achieved such widespread popularity, offering the pianist the opportunity to reveal exceptional skill as a virtuoso while providing an immediate and irresistible musical appeal for the listener. Both the original piano solo form and the orchestrated version of this composition have found widespread use in animated cartoons. Its themes have also served as the basis of several popular songs.Composed in 1847 and dedicated to Count László Teleki, Hungarian Rhapsody N° 2 was first published as a pianosolo in 1851. Its immediate success and popularity on the concert stage soon led to an orchestrated version, arranged by the composer in collaboration with Franz Doppler. The Japanese composer Tohru Takahashi has made a splendid transcription of this great music for clarinet choir. A wonderful piece of music for an advanced ensemble!
