The Piccolo 2nd Oboe 2nd Bassoon Contra-Alto Clarinet 3rd Trombone and Double Bass parts are all optional but if you have these instruments it will sound more full.

Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher) which serves as the program's closer demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts however this concertino can be performedindividually to great effect as a short concert opener.

This contemporary-sounding work makes a fine concert opener or festival selection! Your band will demonstrate a wide variety of styles in less than three minutes. There is plenty of enjoyable 'flight time' for the upper woodwinds exciting passages for the brass and a fetching liberally-cued brass ensemble section.

On This Day Earth Shall Ring---a festive processional on the ancient melody arranged by Scott Watson---explores both aspects. Beginning quietly, the modal tune emerges over a chant drone with rustic, medieval percussion. Before long, the piece takes on the joyous character alluded to in the tune's most familiar English text setting, 'On This Day Earth Shall Ring' (written by composer, Jane Joseph, a student of Gustav Holst). As the work draws to an ebullient close, all the stops are pulled with resounding brass and ringing metallic percussion!
