This fun and poignant new musical from Sheila Wilson (Hosanna Rock!, Scrooge, Rock Around the Flock, The Sel?sh Giant) moves through laughter and tears as it tells the Christmas story with style and wit. All the favourite characters feature, with optional appearances from King Herod and Emperor Caesar Augustus, and even sheep if you have small children and woolly costumes. Everyone's kept in order by a zealous director, whilst the friendly caretaker tidies up the confetti and straw. The play can be shortened or lengthened as required, and is easily adaptable for varying numbers and abilities.The six cool and catchy songs include the funky 'Knock, Knock!', the rocky 'Do the Wise Man's Walk' - and the beautiful 'Peace on Earth'. There are optional Recorder, Glockenspiel and Kazoo instrumentals, as well as Percussion and Sheila's trademark hand-jives. The musical ends with a medley and a heartfelt wish from all the cast (even Herod) for Peace on Earth. Philip Kern is a master at arranging well-loved hymns in an exciting way. One of his arrangements The Glory of His Promises was a top-seller when first released. Now he offers two traditional hymns in His River HisPeace – “It Is Well with My Soul” and “Peace Like a River.” We frequently receive requests for arrangements of old hymns and this gentle SATB arrangement will go a long way to fill that need.Ladies begin with “It is Well with My Soul ” then men enter singing “Peace Like a River” with all four parts completing the verse. Then a combining of the two hymns majestically crescendos to a fortissimoconclusion followed by a tender repeat of the final phrase. Glorious.

It was given its first performance there by Charles Harrison on the 17 June 2017. It lasts some 4 minutes andproves to be a thoroughly engaging piece in her customary refined idiom. It is in three main sections with a graded increase of tempo throughout. Thematic material is presented at the start cantabile. The central sectionprovides an energetic development marked animato leading to the conclusion molto mosso which gives the theme as in the opening but in augmentation. Throughout I feel an orchestral sense of colour and interrelationships inthe music - and have found it delightful to play. A modest two manual and pedal instrument with some contrasted quiet colours available will suffice and the technical demands are by no means severe. A delightful addition to therepertoire of short self-contained delightful pieces. - Organists' Review Duration: Approx 4 minutes.
