Easy Piano Pieces from Bach to Schoenberg for piano-To awaken musical creativity and get to know Urtext practice - this is the unique and innovative idea pursued by Expedition Klavier. Expedition Klavier is an album of selected easy Piano pieces from various Wiener Urtext editions. The volume contains well-known and lesser known original compositions from Bach to Schoenberg which are intended to diversify second- and third-year Piano lessons. In contrast to common play-along media the accompanying CD focuses on a representative selection of pieces from the compositions contained in this volume thus giving the pupil the opportunity to do his or her own imaginative exploring. He or she willgo on an exciting trip through the epochs which is presented by the pianist Markus Schirmer from Graz. This trip illustrates the varied forms and facets of the compositions contained in this volume from finding the adequate tempo to gaining an insight into an original manuscript by Bach. Internet links listed in an appendix referring to the compositions encourage the pupil to search for other traces. It was with deliberate intent that the music pieces were performed not solely by the professional pianist Markus Schirmer but also by his 12-year-old 'travelling companion' Philipp Scheucher. The reduced distance between the performance of a player of the same age and one's own performance will motivate the pupil better than a still unattainable concert-like performance. Nevertheless this exemplary goal is not suppressed here. An interview with the piano teacher Maria Zgubic from Graz at the end of the CD explains to parents and teachers the purpose and meaningfulness of 'Expedition Klavier'.

For Violin Viola and Piano (Reduced from the orchestra version). Britten was so remarkably prolific as a young composer that many of the works from his teens were put aside to await revision or completion as he rushed on tothe next piece. This was particularly the case around the time of his Opus 1 Sinfonietta composed in the summer of 1932 his second year as a student at the Royal College Of Music.The Sinfonietta waswritten (in less than three weeks) very soon after Britten had completed the first draft of the Double Concerto; but after finishing the Sinfonietta he went back to revise the Concerto's second movement. He started workon his Op.2 Phantasy for Oboe and String Trio a few weeks later.Although the Concerto follows the same three-movement pattern as the Sinfonietta it is more ambitious in scale; and since the sketchis unusually for Britten complete in practically every detail it is puzzling that he never made a full score of the work after finishing the composition and seems to have made no attempt to get it performed. It is not clear ifhe had particular performers in mind (he was of course a Viola player although he is not likely to have intended the part for himself). He showed the work to his composition teacher at the college John Ireland who as Brittenrecorded in his diary was 'pretty pleased' with it; but it is distinctly possible that his experience in rehearsing the Sinfonietta with a student orchestra in 1932 ('I have never heard such an appalling row!' readsanother diary entry) discouraged him from going on to complete the Double Concerto in score. He was not to hear any of his orchestral works until the first performance of Our Hunting Fathers in 1936.In theabsence of Britten's full score it was necessary for me to prepare the work from the sketch. But the instrumentation is so carefully indicated in the draft that the resulting score is not far from being 100% Britten - only between

Béla Bartók wrote the first four volumes of the Mikrokosmos as a series of beginning Piano exercises for his son Péter. The great Hungarian composer's complete six-volume collection represents one of the most comprehensive anthologies of contemporary technique ever assembled. That is to give piano pieces which can be used from the very beginning and then going on. It is graded according to difficulties. And the word Mikrokosmosmay be interpreted as a series of pieces in many different styles representing a small world. Or it may be interpreted as 'world of the little ones the children.'' This volume constitutes the definitive edition of Bartók's tutorials drawing upon all known manuscripts and the printed originals for a corrected version approved by the composer's son and the first student to benefit from these exercises.
