Ercole Pasquini (1550 ca-ante 1620), working for many years in Ferrara, then Frescobaldi’s predecessor as organist of the Cappella Giulia, leaves a considerable corpus of keyboard music that identify him as a link between Frescobaldi and Naples. It is half a century since the first critical edition of Ercole Pasquinis keyboard music was published (CEKM, vol. 12). This new edition (in two volumes) appears in the light of subsequent scholarship. It offers new solutions for some troublesome passages. It includes a number of pieces that were not included in the previous edition, but which do seem to have been attributed to Pasquini, as well as unattributed pieces which maywell have been by him. It also takes account of a source (ms. Naples 48, dated ca.1600) which has come to light in the intervening years. This manuscript includes a copy of a Canzona by Pasquini that is older and generally superior to the other surviving copies of this piece. The preface contains detailed discussion of the composers biography, the provenance of the sources, and the performance implications of the notation. Both preface and commentary are in English and Italian.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupre (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. His Complete Course in Organ Improvisation is for beginners of Organ improvisation, who have previously acquired some Organ technique. The first volume gives focus to harmonisation of scales and chorales, phrases, cadences, modulation, and form and structure, among other musical aspects. Dupre studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for Piano, Organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous Organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupre's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Complete Course in Organ Improvisation is no exception. .

The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.

The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach's authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes' text sections. The so called ,,Neumeister-Chorale are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ,,Neumeister-Sammlung should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. Breitkopf has given the world a splendid edition of the organ works of Bach. These final two volumes offer a wealth of chorale-based music benefiting from the very latest research. The few available biographical data tell us that Francisco Correa de Arauxo (or de Acevedo) was born in Seville and baptized probably in September 1584. He was appointed organist of the Salvador, the second church in Seville, in 1599, and ordained priest probably in 1608. After several unsuccessful attempts to become organist of the Cathedral, he accepted an offer to take the main position at the Cathedral of Segovia and remained there until his death, in spite of invitations by the Chapter of Seville to return home and take the office he had always wanted. He is buried in the Cathedral of Segovia.
Not unlike J.S. Bach, Correa gives the image of an artist inbetween times, with one foot in tradition and establishment, and the other in revolution and novity. We must recognize the amazing beauty and genius of his music, a genius which sets him apart from all other Spanish, just as Frescobaldi from all other Italians, Grigny from all other French and Bach from all other German composers of their times.
The Facultad Organica was published in 1626. This new Urtext edition, edited by Guy Bovet, is based on the Brussels copy; doubtful passages have been compared with the two copies of the Madrid Biblioteca Nacional.
