Arrangement for Piano Fourhands-In the 19th century arrangements for Piano four-hands were usually versions which people played at home if the works could not be heard in concert. In cases such as these Brahms did not however just make functional versions butcreatively transcribed his works for the piano. As the composer he allowed himself greater freedom than arrangers for publishers did. In this form his arrangements greatly contributed to the success of his works in musical life inthe 19th century. It is on account of their creativity that Brahms’ arrangements have attracted new interest in musical circles over the last few decades. Despite having already assumed the costs for a monument to Beethoven in Bonn Liszt's spiritual affinity for Beethoven also moved this greatest piano virtuoso of the nineteenth century to pay an even finer tribute: a superlative set of piano transcriptions of the master's nine symphonies. After hearing the Boston Symphony Orchestra perform Martinu?s Symphony No. 1 in New York Mischa Elman commissioned the composer to write a Violin Concerto for him. Martinu thereupon composed his second Violin Concerto in 1943. Composed in 1898 Sibelius’ first symphony does not closely resemble the brass-heavy compositional style of his later symphonic works such as Finlandia for which he is well known. Instead the symphony reflects the lyrical style of works by Tchaikovsky and Brahms. Although Sibelius later denied having been influenced by either Tchaikovsky or Brahms the lyrical style and fewer use of Brass signifies that the piece emulates the symphonies of both composers.Sibelius’ Symphony No.1 in E Minor Op.29 is characterised by its use of string and woodwind solos; a Clarinet solo opens the first movement while Violin Viola and Cello solos featurein the later movements. The Symphony No.1 in C Major (Op. 21) was first performed in 1800 and published in 1801. It is scored in four movements: Adagio molto Allegro con brio; Andante cantabile con moto; Menuetto: Allegro moltoe vivace; Adagio Allegro molto e vivace.Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827) was a German composer and pianist and arguably the most famous composer of all time.
