By Jennifer Castellano. Spectrum, Seven Preludes for Piano was inspired by a work by the American artist, Ellsworth Kelly (b. 1923). The composer writes, When I was a freshman in college, I saw his work entitled Spectrum at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work consisted of thirteen large panels, and each contained a different color or shade of color. The first panel was yellow and the last was yellow. To me this work was a visual representation of a chromatic scale played one full octave up the piano keyboard. Five years after the magnificent sighting at the Met, I decided that I wanted to make an audio representation of the seven colors of the rainbow, each represented by a different tonality or pitch center: A being red, B orange, C yellow, D green, E blue, F indigo, and G violet. Spectrum abandons the use of the conventional major-minor key systems and instead uses a scale which the composer invented called the Castellonian Mode. In it's original form the scale is spelled C D E F G G# (or Ab) A Bb C. The sound of this new tonal system exhibits both major and minor-like qualities and yet has a new sonority of its own. The Castellonian Mode was invented in the summer of 2004 and has served as the basis of many of her tonal compositions.

A memorable musical competition commissioned by the emperor Joseph II took place on 7 February 1786 as part of a festival in the orangery of the Schönbrunn palace. A German Singspiel ensemble performed Mozart’s “Schauspieldirektor” whilst Antonio Salieri’s “Prima la musica e poi le parole” was performed by the Italian court singers and musicians. This charming opera satire belongs to the genre of “metamelodramma” in which the opera itself becomes the subject of the action. The people who are part of an opera production, for example the librettist, composer and prima donna, appear as characters on the stage and are presented in a humorous self-reflection. In this ‘theatre about theatre’ Salieri parodies the music from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabino” in his insert arias, thus playing on the music which was totally familiar with the audience of the time. By reflecting on the musical-dramatic style of that period and discussing whether ‘the word’ or ‘the music’ should take priority, this masterpiece is considered to be an early forerunner to Richard Strauss’s “Capriccio”.The new edition of the score is published as part of “opera – Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editions”. There are several alterations regarding the libretto text, stage directions, articulation, ornamentation, etc. which have been incorporated into this newly engraved vocal score. Furthermore, all appendix numbers from the score which concern the quotations from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabino” have also been incorporated.• Urtext vocal score based on the historical-critical hybrid score published as part of “opera – Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editions” edited by Thomas Betzwieser (music edition) and Adrian La Salvia (text edition).• Original Italian libretto with singable German translation• Comprehensive bilingual foreword (Ger/Eng) on the genesis and reception of the work, on metamelodramma and intertextuality etc.• Includes an extensive appendix to the quotations taken from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabino”• Idiomatic piano reduction

We have sought to put together a number of short pieces - or to inspire the creation of new ones - that contain no great technical difficulties. The result is a broad spectrum of multifaceted compositional styles, ranging from Boulez's rigorously structured pieces to Hespo's musical stimuli that are to be worked out freely by the performer, and on to Schnebel's 'Bagatellen', whose interpretation requires the use of the performer's voice. Annette et LubinJustine Favart and Adolphe Blaise'sAnnette et Lubinwas premiered on 15 February 1762 at the Paris Opera-Comique - the first new production at that theater following its merger with the Comedie-Italien. It was a resounding success: by the time the season came to an end, on 3 April, it had been almost continuously on the program with no decline in interest from the public, and it remained in the repertoire for more than thirty years. Countless new editions, translations, and parodies of the play bear witness to its impact far beyond the borders of Paris. Like all of Favart's works, it deals with the subject of natural love, unencumbered by considerations of money or social status endangering it from the outside through powerful aristocratic or wealthy rivals. The plot is based on a literary model, the like-named tale by Jean-Francois Marmontel, which is in turn based on a contemporary occurrence. Annette and her cousin Lubin are sharply reprimanded for their love by an estate administrator (Le Bailli) who himself has designs on Annette. He takes advantage of Annette's illegitimate pregnancy to extort her: only by marrying him can she escape condemnation by society and the church. But Annette and her lover are able to gain the protection of the local squire (Le Seigneur), and the story ends happily with a conciliatory gesture from the lord of the manor. The second volume in our series OPERA, Annette et Lubin, consists of a cloth-bound book and an Edirom file stored on a USB card in credit-card format. The number of simultaneous users of the edition's digital component is unlimited.Further information on the work and the OPERA series can be found at http://www.opera-edition.com/en/annetteetlubin_en.htm.OPERA: Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editions is dedicated to critical editions of outstanding works of European music theatre from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Compositions of French, Italian, German, English, Scandinavian and Slavic origin are being edited. These include specific genres which have seldom been given attention in editorial undertakings until now and which present their own editorial problems, such as ballet, theatre music, melodrama or operetta.A new feature is the form of the presentation in so-called hybrid editions. While the scores appear in traditional cloth-bound volumes, the musical and textual sources, the editions of the dramatic texts, as well as the critical commentaries are prepared and presented on an electronic platform (Edirom). Thanks to this ability to access the underlying sources, the editorial decisions are completely transparent to the user. This special editorial access being implemented by OPERA's editions uses the software Edirom, which was developed in a project of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) based at the University of Paderborn. All components of the electronic part are encoded according to the modern standard of XML. The text components follow the standard of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI).

String Quartet No.1 - 'Quartetto Breve' (1952) by Per Norgard. Programme note: The spectrum of sound, the gesticulation - in short, the very nature of the strings - has always had a central place in my output, demonstrated by the numbers of string quartets, concertos with string soloist, chamber and solo works. The interest dates back to my school years, when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow, four strings and five fingers.. My first string quartet - Quartetto Breve - has a firm root in the Nordictradition and is strongly inspired by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and my teacher Vagn Holmboe (1909-96). Per Norgard (1998) .

Robert Winn's exercises for the development of articulation and tonguing shall show all flutists an interesting way to get to know and add to the character and spectrum of musical expression. This edition is centred on the technique of tonguing and a deeper knowledge of articulation with regard to conscious and unconscious movements of the tongue and diaphragm. The exercises compiled from the classical concert literature shall help to improve the player's musical imagination and help him to learn to listen closely. The coordination of the tongue and fingers as well as of sound and technique is improved, as is double and triple tonguing and other advanced articulation techniques.
