Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) completed his Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 28, in 1908, and it is the first of three Dresden pieces, the others being his Symphony No. 2 and part of an opera. Although he eventually abandoned the idea, the sonata was originally inspired by Goethe's play Faust, which has inspired so many works of the 19th and 20th centuries. The premiere took place on October 17, 1908, in Moscow, with Konstantin Igumnov at the piano.

The Violin Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 73, a Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano, occupies an important position in Joachim Raff's oeuvre: it reflects numerous artistic, aesthetic, biographical, and reception-historical aspects characteristic of Raff. The work was composed in Weimar in 1854, when Raff was going through a process of artistic self-discovery. He increasingly distanced himself from his mentor Franz Liszt and intensively explored Wagner as well as the ideal of absolute music - this is also reflected in the music of the sonata. While Raff described the first two movements as objectified, he perceived the last two movements as a piece of him, that is, not free of extra-musical influences. The 1st movement, with its expansive main theme, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn; the 2nd movement reveals the refinement of classical-romantic work with musical material. The 3rd movement, with its partly rhythmic, virtuoso accompanying figures and harmonically advanced passages, allows a deeply romantic, almost tormented insight into a soul life a la Sturm und Drang. The partly irascible last movement revisits already familiar themes and thus creates a musical framework. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)First Urtext Edition of the Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano.

The Dante-Sonata was composed in 1970, inspired by two quotations from Dante's La Divina Comedia, Inferno, each in its turn forming the program of the two movements. Movement 1: Wandering through Inferno Dante sees all those who during their life on earth were ill-tempered and discontented, and who are now doomed for all eternity to stand in mud up to their necks, fighting each other, tearing and scratching each other's flesh. Movement 2: Here the doomed wretches recollect life on earth - the blessed sun and the green meadows; but it is too late to repent. Apart from having this connection with La Divina Comedia the title: Dante-Sonata has a dialectical and music-historical reference, a reference to Franz Liszt's Dante Sonata, without quoting from it in any way. An elusive air of the music of bygone days can be percieved in the second movement, which with its many types of graces is reminiscent of a slow movement of a Baroque dance. Dante-Sonata is dedicated to Elisabeth Klein.

Born in Switzerland, Jean Xavier Lefevre (1763-1829) was a sought-after clarinetist and one of the first clarinet professors at the Paris Conservatory. He is still known today for his Clarinet School (1802), which became a standard work in France and beyond. From this textbook comes the popular Sonata no. 1 with its catchy melody that encourages light playfulness. The piece is graded hereas level 2. Also available: Sonata No. 2 g minor (SE 1039). Lefevre wrote the piece originally for the then common C-Clarinet. For use in the classroom, this edition omits the transposition ofthe clarinet part into the B tuning. The accompanying bass voice of the original was transferred to the piano and supplemented with some suggestions on dynamics and articulation. Hints and tips from publisher Rudolf Mauz (Die frohliche Klarinette) offer students assistance in the preparation of the work. This edition is part of the Schott Student Edition series, which offers a diverse repertoire of lessons, concerts and exams of varying degrees of difficulty (from easy to difficult). To this end Schott continues to publish popular standard works from music history in a modern and clear edition. For many pieces an audio file of the piano accompaniment is available for download.

Piano Sonata No.1 was composed in the early 1960??s. My teacher, Tibor Serly, with whom I studeid for eight years, one day suggested it was time for me to write a sonata. The suggestion was a little intimidating at the time, but somehow I forged ahead until finally it was completed. Fortunately, Tibor's wife, first class pianist Miriam Molin, recorded the piece and can be found at the Naxos Music Library. -Edward Thomas

“French composer and teacher, Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded, Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano being no exception. Milhaud's compositions are influenced by jazz and polytonality, as exemplified in Sonata No. 2. Composed in 1944, Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano is an alternative, exciting sonata made up of three movements; 1) Rural, 2) Dramatic, and 3) Rough. Milhaud makes use of variation in articulation, complex rhythms, chromaticism, accidentals, harmonics, altering tempos, variation in dynamics and a wide tessitura, amongst other aspects. Milhaud's Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano is essential to all advanced violists seeking modern and exciting repertoire.”.

Written in 1972, while Ewazen was pursuing undergraduate studies at Eastman, the Sonata No. 1 for Cello and Piano is his first foray into the 20th-century American tonal music that he first embraced at that time. Composed for a classmate and proficient cellist, Julie Charland, the Sonata is in three movements, the second of which is quite demanding of virtuosity. (Manuscript).
