Sonata for Tuba and Piano

Five sonatas for brass instruments and Piano.For Trumpet in Bb (optional doubling on Flugelhorn) or Trumpet in C.This work was commissioned by Professor James Watson for the brass faculty of the Royal Academy of Music. It was composed between August and September 2008. It is the fifth in a series of six works for brass composed between 2006 and 2009: sonatas for Bass Tuba and Piano (2006) Bass Trombone and Piano (2006) Tenor Trombone and Piano (2007) Horn in F and Piano (2008) and Sinfonia Concertante for Bass Tuba Bass Trombone Tenor Trombone Horn Trumpet Brass and Percussion (2009). The first performance of the Sonata was given on 21 October 2009 at theRoyal Academy of Music by James Woods Davison (to whom the work is dedicated) and Timothy End.

Le répertoire solo pour Tuba prend forme dans les années 1950, avec la Sonata de Paul Hindemith et le Concerto de Ralph Vaughan Williams. This work is dedicated to John Fletcher who gave the first performance on 24 April 1976. The concerto is in three movements the first in sonata-form shell with two contrasting themes. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto. Set as part of the ABRSM Tuba Syllabus.

A Short Sonata is a work written at around Grade 8 standard for Euphonium and Piano. In each of the work's three movements different qualities of the instrument are utilised and explored.In the first movement an Allegro in 6/8 time these qualities are the instrument's general agility and its ability to play fast-moveing melodies in a way that drives the music forward. Throughout different ways of phrasing similar material are used to create interest and a varied sound.In the second slow movement the resonant and majestic way in which the euphonium can deliver lyrical melodic lines is explored. The movement usmade up of four long phrases which peak dynamically at the third giving room for interpretation and feeling. The third movement exploits the instrument's ability to play loudly and aggressively using lots of accented notes hairpin crescendos and quick double-tounging. A Short Sonata was the winner of the first Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff May 2010.

This work was first performed on 7th December 1980 by John Fletcher and Robert Noble at Southgate Music Club. Duration about 11 minutes. Selected as part of the ABRSM Tuba Syllabus Grade 8.
