Taneli Kuusisto (1905-88) was a versatile influence in Finnish musical life: composer, pianist, organist, church musician, writer on music, and Rector of the Sibelius Academy. Of the more than 120 solo songs penned by him, Suomalainen rukous (A Finnish Prayer), a setting of a poem by Uuno Kailas composed in 1939 on the eve of the Winter War, has acquired a status all of its own. The solo songs of Taneli Kuusisto are published in two volumes edited by Ismo Lahdetie. KYO-WA is a suite in three movements - Fanfare, Chorale and March, which composer Satoshi Yagisawa wrote individually year on year between 2008 and 2010 for a symphonic wind band. The word KYO in the title can mean resonance, but also togetherness, working together and competition. WA means peace and harmony. These ideas, together with a broad palette of emotions from sadness and fear to hope and rapture, have been woven into a piece that is typical of his new compositional style.KYO-WA is een driedelige suite, bestaande uit Fanfare, Chorale en March.

A versatile Mass setting for use throughout the liturgical year, Mass of the Sun of Justice / Misa Sol de Justicia is fully bilingual, singable entirely in English or in Spanish, or any pastoral combination of both languages. At its core, this setting is built on assembly-minded melodies. Much of the choral writing is two-part, albeit spelled out in four voices, whereby the basses frequently double the soprano melody, and the alto and tenor lines essentially share a single harmony in their respective ranges, splitting only at cadence points for a fuller effect. Optional descants and divisi further expand the voicing possibilities. The additional instrumentation is particularly spirited, further enhancing these sung texts for solemn occasions. “Sun of justice” is a term used to reference Christ with respect to his second coming, as found in the ancient “O” antiphons. This title appears in the Lectionary among the Alleluia options for the common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is, in fact, assigned to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated within the Advent season. As such, the music is “Advent-like” in nature—joyful and filled with hope.
