The late forties and early fifties saw influential country guitarist Merle Travis come to fame with one of his most popular tunes Sixteen Tons. This arrangement for unaccompanied mens voices is for one tenor and two bass vocals.

(Tenebrae version)-Stay with me Lord was originally commissioned by the Genesis Foundation as one of three commissioned settings of Padre Pio’s Prayer after Communion and first performed in June 2008 at Westminster Cathedral London by The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers. This version was arranged for the 2012 album The Call of Wisdom an album of a selection of Will Todd’s choral music performed by Tenebrae and The English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nigel Short. It alters much of the way the work is accompanied both by the piano but also by adding an alternative strings and harp scoring (full score and parts available on download). Todd’s stirring harmonies which make fulluse of the mixed-voice choir with only the very occasional need for divisi and ability to write the most beautiful melodies has resulted in this work proving very popular with choirs of a range of abilities.

This enticing choral arrangement of the well-known first Polovtsian Dance from Borodin's Prince Igor juxtaposes the music of a Russian with text from Act 4 of The Tempest - 'Our revels now are ended'. Chilcott masterfully combines the SSAATTBB forces with wordless upper-voice solos and an optional guitar line in a calm yet powerful evocation of the text.A featured song on the album Into The Light with Kaori Muraji(guitar) and The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers.

Arranged for SSSAAATTTBBB the lyrics are from an anonymous writer of the fourteenth century and have been adapted by the composer.The composer says: 'Woefully arrayed is a supreme choral setting by William Cornysh Junior who died in 1523 of a text usually regarded as of anonymous composition though there have been some attributions to John Skelton. It is a thoughtful powerful meditation on Christ on the Cross and though Cornysh’s setting has remarkable intensity and contrapuntal artistry I felt a strong wish to add my own response to this fine text. The different versions of it have different verses that used by Cornysh has three verses (plus therefrain) while there are others with four or even five (one attributed to Skelton has five). I have chosen to restrict myself to the three used by Cornysh using my own adaptation of the modernised words which yet incorporates some archaisms a deliberate choice for reasons of rhythm and verbal sound. This setting was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival 2009 for Stile Antico to whom it is dedicated.''Difficult to perform but not difficult to listen to this 2009 Three Choirs Festival commission was first performed by Stile Antico who have since toured it. It is a heartfelt response to the fourteenth-century text passionate and anguished Christ is on the cross ‘woefully arrayed’. Although written for a secular choir it is a piece that could be sung by many cathedral and collegiate choirs: there is considerable doubling between the sixteen lines and a keyboard reduction to help the initial sorting out. A Hymne To God My God is a composition by renowned composer Michael Ball arranged for quadruple SATB choir as an a cappella performance. The piece is a setting of texts by English poet John Donne and it was commissioned in 1984 by the BBC for the 30th anniversary of the BBC Northern Singers.   This wonderful work includes a wealth of lush harmonies created by the sizeable sixteen voices. The solid interplay of 4 different bass melodies lay an immense foundation for the 8 different soprano and alto voices lending an exquisite weight to the lyrical beauty of Donne's poetry. A joy to sing this unique a cappella piece is sureto be the highlight of any performance.    Composer Michael Ball was a Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust Scholar at the Royal College of Music and in 1970 he was one of four students selected to take part in master classes with Nadia Boulanger. A prolific composer Ball's works have been played and broadcast internationally and he has received numerous commissions including five from the BBC.    

This edition of the Salve Regina by Portuguese composer Diogo Dias Melgás (1638-1700) is the first published version of the work which has previously only been available in a library edition. Suitable for liturgical or concert performance this setting is in four equally active parts throughout each of which takes the initial plainsong motif at the opening. The effectiveness of this moving work lies in the skilful manipulation of simple motivic material through the use of devices such as parallel writing sequences repetition suspensions and hocket. The vocal score is presented alongside detailed performance and editorial notes and an optional bassocontinuo part appears as an appendix.Salve Regina is featured on The Sixteen's CD 'A Goldern Age of Portugese Music' conducted by Harry Christophers (COR16020).

More Than Hymns is a new two-volume collection of anthems for mixed voice choirs featuring extended arrangements of existing hymn tunes together with original anthem-style settings of the texts of several well known hymns. Of the sixteen works in this first volume six are published here for the first time including new arrangements by composers of today: Malcolm Archer Rogers Covey-Crump John Joubert Barry Rose and Gavin Williams. The texts cover many seasons of the church's year - Advent Epiphany Passiontide Easter Ascension as well as celebratory occasions such as festival services and weddings.
