The Eroica according to the Complete EditionExploring the Eroica is the name of the essay with which the editor made herself known back in 1998 and which contributed decisively to the research into the complex transmission. Written in 1803, the autograph of the work is lost today. The title Sinfonia Eroica is already found in the first edition (but only there as well). The main source of the edition is the copy of the score, which was carefully examined and emended by Beethoven, and into which he made corrections even after the appearance of the first printed set of parts. In addition, the copies of the parts used for first performances (before publication) as well as the extremely error-filled first edition of the instrumental parts are also relevant; more so, however, is another printed set that Beethoven personally revised. Thanks to the new performance material, the musical text of the new Beethoven Complete Edition can now also be heard alternatively to the Breitkopf Urtext edition by Peter Hauschild (PB/OB 5233).

It was the Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas concerto) in C major that won special popularity continuing a tradition which was cultivated by Corelli with his pastoral at the end of Op. 6 No. 8 or by Torelli in his Op. 8 No. 6 and reaching to the pastoral in Handel's Messiahs and to the sinfonia in the second cantata of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas oratorium. This, finally, originates from the music-making of shepherds - coming from the Abruzzi and from Calabria to Rome at Christmas to play the shawm and the bagpipes in front of the cribs. Hence the popular consecutive thirds and the sustained bass tones characterizing the first Largo, a genuine siciliano in the rocking, typically dotted 12/8 time.

The original manuscript of the work has been lost, but a copy with corrections in the composer's hand, dating presumably from 1804, has come down to us. Beethoven added the following comment on the title page: 'geschrieben auf Bonaparte', which lends authenticity to the familiar story that oroginally the composer had named the symphony after Napoleon Bonaparte, but when he learnt that the revolutionary whom he idolized had let himself crown emperor, he tore off the cover page of the score in disillusion and rage, and changed both its title and dedication in the following way: 'Sinfonia EROICA, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire d'un grand' uomo, e dedicata a Sua Altezza Serenissima il Principe di Lobkowitz.'.

One could say that Michael Kuhn's cadenzas to Mozart's beloved Double Concerto K. 299 went directly from the concert stage to the publisher, and from the publisher back to performers. Commissioned by the Concentus Musicus Wien, they were recorded on CD in 1998 under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Although the musicians played on original instruments (transverse flute and single-action pedal harp), the cadenzas can be executed just as effectively on modern instruments. For his work, Kuhn took as his guideline the original cadenzas Mozart wrote for his Sinfonia concertante K. 364 and his Concerto for two pianos and orchestra K. 365, which date from about the same time. Kuhn's new edition should be seen as an alternative to Carl Reinecke's popular cadenzas (EB 6859), which continue to be available from Breitkopf & Hartel.Kuhn's new edition should be seen as an alternative to the popular cadenzas 3 Cadenzas for Mozart's Concerto in C major K. 299 (297c) by Carl Reinecke.
