Compiled and edited by Amy Porter, Treasures for Flute and Piano is acollection of Philippe Gaubert’s shorter works for flute and piano. Gaubertwas a multi-talented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a composer, teacher, and master conductor. Over his lifetime, he became one of the mostimportant musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first halfof the 20th century. Trained in theory and harmony at the Paris Conservatory,Gaubert was also deeply influenced by other composers at the time, includingDebussy, Fauré, and Dukas. Editor Amy Porter is a distinguished Professorat The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and hasbeen praised by critics for her exceptional musical talent and her passion forscholarship. This edition represents eleven of the sixteen works from AmyPorter and Dr. Penelope Fischer’s video study guide, “The Gaubert Cycle: TheComplete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubertâ€.Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a very important teacher and flutist in our classical flute playing lineage. In this edition we have gathered his beautiful, shorter compositions for flute and piano all in one place, to be cherished as “Gaubert’s Treasures.â€Philippe Gaubert personified the modern French school of flute playing as introduced by his teacher Paul Taffanel (1844–1908) at the Paris Conservatory. Gaubert was a multitalented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a gifted composer, teacher and master conductor. Over his lifetime he became one of the most important musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Gaubert’s musical andpedagogical gifts to us are passed along through generations of students and continue to touch the hearts of many who listen to his fine, and refined, music.Philippe Gaubert studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Raoul Pugno, Xavier Leroux, and then for a brief time with Charles Lenepvu. It was after this study that he won the famous Prix de Rome second prize in composition. Even with his schooling of theory and harmony in Paris, he was deeply influenced by other composers of the time, namely Debussy, Fauré and Dukas. Between the years of 1905–1914 Gaubert’s early workswere arrangements and short pieces written for the year-end final exam pieces at the Conservatory.Between 1914–1918 Gaubert served in the French Army during World War I, most notably in the battle of Verdun in 1916. This was considered one of the largest battles against the Germans in WWI. He was wounded but his creativity level was not dampened. He was rewarded for his service and awarded medals for his bravery. It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. He loved literature and poetry which inspired over thirty vocal works from 1903 through 1938.He also wrote twenty-six instrumental chamber works for other instruments: oboe, cornet, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, harp and combinations of these instruments with piano. Some of these were commissioned jury pieces, but many were for his musician friends.Six full-length stage works, both ballets and operas for the stage, several tone poems and symphonies were written throughout his lifetime. This edition represents eleven out of the sixteen works from our video study guide “The Gaubert Cycle: The Complete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubert†with guest pianist Tim Carey. Omitted in this edition are Sonatas Nos. 1–3, Ballade, and Sonatine.

Supplementary Volume 15 of the New Liszt Edition contains both earlier versions of published works and also several works that remained as manuscript. The most extensive work in this volume is the earliest known draft of the Piano Concerto in A major (written in 1839 for solo piano). Not only does the draft give insight into the process of the work's genesis, but it also holds its own as a work for piano solo. Additionally, the volume contains several shorter works, such as a piano transcription of Robert Schumann's Lied Widmung, which shows how original Liszt's interpretations were, and also two early drafts of the Zweite Elegie dedicated to Lina Ramann (a former pupil ofLiszt's and his first biographer). The latter have been published in facsimile. Supplementary Volume 15 features a detailed preface in German, English and Hungarian, which reveals valuable details on each work. The cloth-bound version also has critical notes in English.

Supplement Volume 14 of the New Liszt Edition contains mostly unpublished early versions of piano works from the last two decades of the composer s life. The bulk of the volume comprises pieces from Volume 3 of Années de pelerinage and the Weihnachtsbaum cycle. Of the latter, two complete early versions are extant. One of these consists of pieces which are shorter and more condensed than the final version. For performer and listener alike, it is an exciting experience to become familiar with this set of pieces in its early form.Among the individual pieces in this volume, the autograph version of the beautifully evocative Schlummerlied im Grabe is also published here forthe first time. Finally, Liszt s characteristically economical attitude to composing can be studied in the original form of what can be considered as the common starting point for La lugubre gondola I and II. The latest volume of the New Liszt Edition also contains a detailed preface in German, English, and Hungarian, including new results of research, five manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This edition s contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition, except for the omission of the critical notes. Supplement 8 of the New Liszt Edition contains first versions of Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos 12-21 and two shorter Liszt pieces with a Hungarian connection. All works in the volume appear here for the first time in a scholarly edition. This version of the Hungarian Rhapsodies ensued in 1846-50 from Magyar dallok (Hungarian Songs) Nos 1-11, published in Supplement 7. Piece No. 13 is based on the Rákóczi March, which Liszt set on several occasions. It had been a vital encore piece since his first concert in Hungary in 1839. Inclusion in this volume of the first version of the piece known as the Mosonyi Funeral March (a forerunner of the much later No. 7 in the Hungarian Historical Portraits) is especially notable as its autograph manuscript only emerged recently. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. Ludwig Schytte (1848-1909) was a Danish composer and pianist, who spent most of his life living and working in Germany and Austria. Born in Jutland, he studied with Franz Liszt before settling in Vienna, where he taught for twenty years. He wrote around 175 works with opus numbers, most of which were published in his lifetime, including two operas and a Piano concerto. Most of his compositions were shorter works for the Piano, and many of his pedagogical studies are still used today.
25 Studies For Piano (25 Leichte Etuden Fur Pianoforte; Op. 160) was published in 1908, making it one of the composer's last works. It has remained popular withPiano teachers and students for over a century.

Bruckner described his setting of Psalm 150 of 1892 as my best festive cantata of all. Psalm 150 has a definite festive character, manifested straight away in the monumental Hallelujah theme for the full forces which opens the cantata, and which punctuates the work and concludes it. Bruckner devotes most of his music to the verse Alles was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn - firstly in an exciting section with solo violin and solo soprano, and subsequently in a great fugue on a striking octave theme. All in all, a fascinating combination of filigree motifs, chromatically bold complexities and intensifications, and powerful passages up to triple forte. The chorus is often divided in the homophonic passages, with wide vocal ranges, but the fugue remains in four parts. With a duration of just 9 minutes, this is an ideal companion piece for other shorter works by Bruckner (such as the Te Deum) or, indeed, works by other composers.
